Amiga 2000HD run unix?
« on: April 20, 2009, 03:41:57 AM »
Can a stock Amiga 2000 HD run the original Amiga UX that came with the 2500UX models?

Just wondering....

Thanks,
Mike Valverde

Stock? As in 68000 and 1MB of RAM? No. Check the requirements.

Great Link Matt - and once again without an Accelerator, I am out of luck!  They just sooooo expensive!

Oh well, maybe I can get it to work in UAE! I just always wanted to mess with it.  I remember reviewing colleges when I was in high school and saw schools like Virginia Tech (Computer Engineering) could use Amigas with Unix for their curriculum...

Thanks for the info!

But wait, you need only a cheapo A2620 or A2630, right?  At least that's what the 2500UX housed.

Yeah, AMIX would be interesting to get running in WinUAE. It's a challenge because it relies on some very specific hardware components. WinUAE is starting to get into the emulation of specifics, but I don't know if it's fully there yet.

Until UAE emulates a MMU who will be out of luck.

But if one is really into such things he could try to run down a copy of Minix.....
1. Make an announcment.
2. Wait a while.
3. Check if it can actually be done.
4. Wait for someone else to do it.
5. Start working on it while giving out hillarious progress-reports.
6. Deny that you have ever announced it
7. Blame someone else

Cheapo huh?  Wonder where I could get one... haven't seen one of those for sale yet on ebay or Amibay - everthing I see is normally expensive - well over $100!

If anyone had one at the right price - I'd buy one, but haven't seen on yet!

BTW, Thanks for the info!

And just how much is "the right price"?

I thought that had been added sometime in the past few years. Guess not. Oh well.

You just can't buy an accelerator for an amiga  below 100 $. That's just wishful thinking.

A2630 or 2630 are pretty low end accelerators though, so around 100$ should be the right price. GVP 030's should be 100$-200$ (depending on how much RAM they have on) and 040-060 should be above 200$-300$ mark (AMIX won't run on 040-060 though AFAIK, so beware)

What do you think is a fair price?  (I have extras.)

Dave,

I don't know what others would consider "fair", but with hardware this old you have to weigh scarcity/demand/reliability all together.  I guess its only worth what you can get for it or willing to pay for it!  And being a free market person I am, if you can get more, then do so because it is what I would do!  To me about $75 + shipping is all I could pay for an A2620/2630 accelerator.

Thanks,
Mike

Ahem - not an exactly Amiga-ish proposal, but why not run Linux/NetBSD/FreeBSD on a cheap piece of PeeCee hardware? Amix doesn't really feel very Amiga actually (does any U*ix?). It's a very interesting piece of software in its own right, but there's nothing cheap modern hardware can't do.
For the sake of 'modern OS hits ancient hardware' I've resurrected a PowerMac 9500 running Mac OS Tiger (a BSD derivate with a Mach kernel) - just slightly younger than a 4000 and rather cheap.
