Curious about Dragons Lair
« on: April 09, 2009, 04:12:19 AM »
During the past few days. I had this fascination with Laserdisc games such as Dragons Lair.

I want to play the original arcade versions and at my local Best Buy I saw the Dragons Lair 20th Anniversary edition from Digital Leisure. Should I get it?

Dragons Lair games remind me of Eric Schwartz's animations.
WinUAE enthusiast.

Curious about: Amiga OS, Morph OS, X-Amiga, Amikit, Amiga Forever, WinUAE, Efika, Minimig,
and other forms Amiga-like Computers.

There is a version that works in a DVD player nicely (if you can find it) - and more accurate to the original than a computer port.  Only problem with this game - is the movement is actually "masked" chapter skips to the next scene or to the death scene if you choose wrong....

The DVD version actually had option to just watch it - which was fun too... but overall the game isn't that good - just pretty!  No idea what the Amiga version was like... I doubt it held up at all on the A500/2000.  I do recall the Amiga version was like 7 or 8 floppies and I think you needed an HD to play it!

Being a fan of DL and SA myself, I've owned just about every version ever available. Believe it or not, the Amiga version holds up extremely well. Space Ace, Dragons Lair and Dragons Lair II are all classics. Yes, they are spread across many floppies, but even so, it's very quick and you'll hardly believe you're messing around with floppies at all (if you've got at least 2 drives that is - lol). There are WHDLoad versions out there too if you can't track down the originals.

The PeeCee and Mac versions are good too. I remember seeing the DVD's, but never bothered since all the others are excellent for what they are.

There's one you can find for the PC that allows you to use a joystick. I used to have it, but lost it some time ago. Check at Game Stop. They always had a copy, for a while. I'm sure you can find it in the bins.

Don Bluth. Always one of my favorite animators. Someday, I'd like to do a 3D version of Mrs. Frisby and the rats of Nimh.

Someday.

The HD-DVD version looks great and plays well enough on the Xbox 360. I think a Blu-Ray version is in the works.

Look up the Daphne emulator. Lots of good DL history on the site.

I used to use Space Ace as the primary means of demoing my A500 to friends.

Dragon's Lair is a great classic in that it is the definitive game that put visuals above playability -- eye candy IMO.

That's a great friggen idea.  I loved the book, and in elementary school I did a board game and a "text adventure" game based upon the book.

The movie, "The Secret of NIMH," was fantastic.

OOOooooo a SPARKLY!

Anyway, I have "Dragon's Lair" for the Amiga, and other than the timing, it's a pretty accurate game to my recollection.  I'd like to get "Space Ace" sometime; the demo looks good.

I'd like to do a re-imagination of the story, to both modernize it and make it something in its own entirety. Elements of both would be included.

As I said, someday.....

There was an effort years ago to port some or all of the game to the VMU (those little PDA looking guys that plugged into Dreamcast controllers). Some of the early samples were pretty cool. The look was obviously degraded--low resolution, black and white--but the animation was accurate.
