Star Trek: Countdown
« on: April 03, 2009, 09:41:38 AM »
Has anyone read the Star Trek: Countdown comic lead-in to the new film? Does anyone agree that it's a steaming turd of a funny book written by gushing Trek fanboys with no story-telling ability? Every panel is a TNG reunion shot, every line a cliché.

I have high hopes for the new film. Let's hope their shooting script is better than their lead-in concept.

The promo clips seem to be getting a pretty good response. I have to say I find it a little difficult to get excited about Star Trek these days. It has just been so naf, and disappointing at times.

I'll probably see it, but I'm not expecting to be thrilled.

My brother, on the other hand, is jumping out of his skin. I suspect that him having two young children is influencing his interest in escapism.
Good good study, day day up!

Yeah, I'll see it too, I'm guessing it isn't really Trek anymore, but given that Trek is dead that may not be such a bad thing...

I love Star Trek.
The 60s original series was great (I saw reruns of this in the early 80s).
The best in my opinion was The Next Generation. Nothing has equalled it, although Voyager was quite good.
Deep Space Nine sucks in general and Enterprise is not much better.
I'll definitely see the new Star Trek. I generally don't like these films that go back to the beginning, because you already know what the future holds for these characters. Not much chance of James T Kirk dying in this movie, is there? (And if he does, you'll know he gets revived in a subsequent film). Nonetheless I'll see the new film.

What we need is a new film and a new crew, from where Nemesis left off.

The new Trek film appears to be splitting the Trek universe into two (well, three including Mirror, Mirror, four if you count the changes introduced by First Contact, five if you think Voyage Home changed things, and even more if you consider the novels canon) distinct timelines: pre-JJ Trek and post-JJ Trek.

Although, Trek can't seem to make up its mind re: time travel. They've used both the classic, causal closed-loop view of time, and the quantum, multiverse view of time.

I actually think DS9 was the strongest of all the series story-wise. It certainly had the best character development of the four--including some of the most memorable guest characters (Brunt--FCA.), thanks to Jeffrey Combs--although the TOS movies really brought the Kirk-Spock-Bones relationship home.

I really enjoyed what they tried to do with Enterprise during the last season, and as always, Jeffrey Combs really shined in his guest spots (as Shran).

I think with the new film, we'll see the same {bleep}y, impetuousness we love about Kirk only without the Shatner whimsy. I can't wait to see what Karl Urban does with Bones. DeForest Kelley was awesome, and it's going to be difficult to bring the same subtle heart and selfless passion to the character. (Or maybe not. DeForest was really just playing an Old West town doc crossed with a Civil War field doc.)

EDIT:

And I thought Nemesis was about as interesting as dirt, unfortunately. I really wanted a decent Romulan story, too. Maybe that's what JJ will deliver, although there's not much left of the Romulan Empire post-Countdown.

Now that I think about it, that's what I *really* wanted from Enterprise. The energy of TNG with a DS9-style drama involving Earth, Vulcan, Romulus, and Andoria. Less let's-go-kill-the-bad-guys and more birth-of-the-Federation.

Fortunately, Battlestar Galactica has filled that gap quite nicely.

Battlestar Galactica demonstrated that a remake could be better than the original.  In a way the new Star Trek appears to be in the same lines as the new BSG, the same story but told in a more modern way.

I think Battlestar Galactica has done what all SF readers know and television producers forgot: Good science (read: speculative) fiction is story driven. If the visual effects don't serve to advance the story, they're unnecessary.

Galactica has had its faults, particularly with pacing during the last two seasons, but it's still better than anything else out there.

Anyway, let's hope JJ and company have realized that and have not demoted Star Trek to two hours of shakey cam nausea.

Ain't It Cool News http://www.aintitcool.com has lots of reviews post-surprise-screening-in-Austin last night. I'm not reading the spoiler ones, but everything is positive so far. Getting a bit geeky excited.

Careful now, that sort of thing can be infectious in a place like this.

Just saw the new movie today. In a word: WOW!!

Totally exceeded my expectations. Completely. ONLY flaw has to do with the way the action scenes were filmed. Typical modern, ADD, camera too close and jittery, but that's a flaw aimed at and by this younger generation.

Incredible film otherwise. TONS of attention paid to detail and I absolutely LOVE the alternate reality take. Totally refreshing to see talent that had little to nothing to do with the Star Trek universe make such an talented and accurate impact. I would LOVE to see this particular series continue. Even the sound track excelled. J.J. Abrams - my hat is off to you. You blew the LOST series (IMO), but the casting, directing and story lines here were TIP TOP. Again - WOW.

Oh - and Wynona Ryder.
