New Paint Program for Amiga - Ideas - Gui - etc
« on: March 31, 2009, 01:44:19 PM »
Hi Everyone,

Here is "Shine" (working title) for a new paint program for Amiga.

The idea of this thread is to create interest and ideas in developing an Amiga only Paint program that not only updates our favourite programs such as Dpaint and Brilliance but brings along lots of new and unique ideas.

So if you have a list of what you want in an Art program, please list them here.

Thanks,
Kev

Hi invent,

is this an actual screenshot of an already working program already or a conceptual picture of what you imagine it to look like?

Good idea...

What kind of platforms do you have in mind for Shine?

This looks fantastic, I think a new paint program is an excellent idea. Perhaps having the option to choose where you want your tools, either sides or top or bottom would be good, since some people are used to Deluxe Paint, Personal Paint or Brilliance and they are all laid out differently.I like the idea of full screen editing too, but maybe when editing an image smaller than the screen it should just have a blank border around the canvas rather than trying to resize the screen to fit the image like some older programs did.

Great work!

Where abouts in Australia are you from?

Dear Friend:

All I want is the ability to paint in 320x200 and 32 colors. That would be good enough for me to paint my pictures.

Hi Colani1200 :)

Its only a concept, but I thought if we get enough ideas/concepts maybe someone would eventually code it ;)

@Steril707/Mike, im open to any platform but ideally Amiga OS5.

Hi Cammy, thanks, im from Brisbane :) Your right about customising the interface and just as important shortcuts, im often wanting to hit the "." to get my brush back to 1 pixel sizing in photoshop. :(

Brilliance is possibly one of my fav Amiga Art apps. Not a day goes by that I wish I could open up that app. and poke more pixels.

Hi Rednova, certainly valid idea, resolution/colour options.

Choosing the amount of colours would be as easy as moving the slider to the amount of colours you want, eg 8,16,258,1024,16m. Designing games sprites I often export as optimised png files, some might be reduced to say 64 colours without loosing any quality but the advantage is file size reduction.

As I only use Photoshop at the moment for work/home. There are still alot of tools I miss such as the magnify tool, or a lock to grid / spray brush.

Then why not use brilliance under emulation, I run it on Aros and it is great especially truebrilliance.

A new program should have the simplicity of DPaint, include all the animation features, and the ability to save animations in AVI and MPEG.
Amiga 3000D UP and running! Hear that clicking. 8)
Amiga 3000D & 4000D in storage sadly.

my only request ATM is that it is 24bit supports all basic gfx formats and that it is STABLE (!). amiga is in bitter need of a stable and functional 24 bit editor/converter. arteffect, perfect paint, xipaint, photogenics? are all either unstable or not intuitive, the only good tv paint is too old.

but if you want to do 32color 320x240 bitmap graphics there is already enough of good software: dpaint, ppaint, brilliance. except that most of it doesnt work on gfx screens, i dont know whats wrong with it.

PPaint works perfectly on GFX screens.
I still use it sometimes to do web gfx... When no Windows paint program can do it for me.. PPaint is always my savior.. :)

GrafX2 might be a good code base to put in those ideas.

http://code.google.com/p/grafx2/

It is available for all Amiga-(like) platforms and the source code is there, so there you go.

I would also say that the ability to customise the toolbar, etc. is essential, as well as being able to define keyboard shortcuts, pleeeeese....
As for the actual 'painting' end of it... Something like DCTV Paint's 'Flow' control, and various painting 'modes'. I still can't get away from DCTV Paint, no matter how old/quirky it is...
I know other paint programs have similar modes, but they never seemed as intuitive to me....

A new paint program would be wonderful.  I think if it had the ability to save in different file formats native to PC (such as jpeg) as well as the Amiga IFF ect would be of great benefit.  Also the ability to add sound/music to animations is a must.  The ease of use/learning curve as dpaint was is also essential as well as supporting native Amiga screen modes from low res to hi res, interlace, HAMM, and also be able to support resolutions from Amigas equipped with graphics cards.
