Genesis DNS
« on: March 29, 2009, 11:56:41 PM »
Hi,

I've dusted off my 1200 and have been working on getting it running again thanks to the EB flicker fixer, 4 way interface and an 8GB flash card....

Anyhow, I've freshly installed WB 3.9 and having a problem with the network...

I'm using a 3com pcmcia card.  Installed genesis and went through the wizard - and I am connected to my network.  Can ping my router etc.

However, its not resolving any WWW names.  Tried bringing up the settings for the card using the "Genesis" entry in the settings menu.... but nothing happens or pops up?

Anybody know how to manually set the dns server entries in genesis?

Also on a side note - I have 128MB of fast ram installed and the graphics memory is still being used up like mad with little use of the fast memory.  Is there any utils to redirect some of the WB graphics memory usage to fast ram?

Can't recall having this issue before, but then my previous amiga setup was in a tower with a mediator and voodoo 3 card...

Thanks.

In the main settings menu, go to interfaces, click on your interface and hit edit, and everything is there. DNS settings are under the last tab ("Resolv").

Hi,

Thanks for that - the problem is that nothing is coming up when I try getting into the settings menu....?

I've already read that the settings for interfaces etc are there but for some reason I open the settings menu, choose "Genesis" from the list (only one there) but nothing comes up.... so I can't change anything in the gui.

hence why I asked if anybody knew where to put the relevant entries in the various settings files.

Thanks for the link to the apps - just what I needed!

DOH! Excuse my lackluster reading skillz... I blame it on yesterday's alcohol consumption.

I'm not sure where to manually edit it in a config file... but if you have SnoopDOS installed, that might give you a clue as to why the menu won't pop up, maybe a missing library or something.

Ahh!!  Forgot all about good old SnoopDOS.  Its been a while.  :D

Well, turns out it was asking for two things.  Firstly, MUI (which I thought would have been installed by the installer off the WB3.9 cd - obviously not!) and then a "vapor_toolkit" library.  Got both copied onto my boot disk and I can now get into the prefs.  Added the DNS server entries and I can now ping various websites by name.

Thanks!

Hi Fizzy: A second vote for FBlit. Also, you may want to use LoadWB SIMPLEGELS in your Startup-sequence ... from the 3.9 FAQ:
Q:    What does "LoadWB SIMPLEGELS" do?
A:    It reverts the system to the old OS 3.1 style of selecting and dragging icons, which is solid icons and positioning one at a time. The new OS 3.5 way is greyed or dotty icons, and positioning all at once. On my A1200T, SIMPLEGELS prevents the 300K Chip RAM loss when using FBlit and WBCtrl on AGA. [Michael Rye] Note: Robin Hueskes reported his system (using a BVisionPPC with CGX4) was very unstable until he used the "SIMPLEGELS" option, so if you are experiencing problems you might give it a try, even if you're using a graphics card.
 My .02 ..

You should install Boingbag 1 at least before starting to use OS 3.9. It has too many bugs without.

Hi,

I already have boing bag 1 and 2 installed.  I installed them straight after a fresh install of wb3.1 & upgrade to 3.9 off my original CD.

Still didn't seem to install MUI though, which is odd.  Nevermind, its all sorted now anyway.   :-D

or run GenesisRA (that uses Reaction) and you wont need any MUI (even if highly recommended)

You should first install Genesis and then Boingbag 1 because this repairs the MUI issue. It's not intended to use MUI. MUI is *not* part of AmigaOS.
