WinUAE: Installing Workbench
« on: March 29, 2009, 06:01:02 PM »
Hi,

I have just installed WinUAE. I never used this emulator much apart to play games from floppy disks. I would now like to go one step forward and learn how to install Workbench on a hard disk. However I do not even know how to define a hard disk in WinUAE. Could someone please help me or else direct me to a tutorial?

Regards,
Sim085

p.s. - later on I would like to copy this hard disk image to a real SCSI hard disk so that I can experience my set-up on the real hardware :)

Do the usual configs with rom and what type of machine.

Then take hard drives
Add directory (have a folder made for this)
In the box device name write dh0 (no : after)
In the box volume label write workbench or System
Take configurations and save this.
Take floppy drive and attach the OS.adfs
reset
Do the installation
Then eject all floppys and restart.

Then you are pleased with everything install izarc and lha or zip the content of the folder.
Have 3 boot partitions on the real amiga.
Boot into one of them. Transfer the zip and unpack into the free boot partition. Hope it works out.

Thank you for your help. I am installing workbench right now :) I just have another question. If I connect the SCSI drive to my computer then I do not need to have three partitions right? or?

Ops! Are you going to copy the folder directly to the drive from within winuae and just move the drive?

In that case it is not so necessary with 3 partitions. On my 1200 I have to move the files over from the pc with a CF. Then it is handy with 3 partitions. It is easy to hold both mouse buttons and boot into another partition and then move the hole content to the first partition that boots by  default. It is also good to have 3 for easy restore if things go wrong.

I have three 500 mb bootable partitions and then some large work partitions.

Here are some info about formatting a scsi drive and transfer a drawer with a WBinstall that have been made with winuae.

http://wiki.classicamiga.com/How_to_install_SFS_onto_a_real_Harddrive_within_WinUAE

You have to mark the Add hard drive box to make winuae see the scsi and use hdtools to format it.
This was a bit more complicated. Hope it works out.
