Indivision will not fit on all 1200s
« on: March 27, 2009, 02:01:41 AM »
I just got a new PAL motherboard from AmigaKit to replace my defective one. It has an HP-branded Lisa chip in place of a Commodore one. I assume it's an Amiga Technologies board. There is also a tiny component (resistor?) a few millimeters to the left of the chip. Between that component and possibly a slight difference in the Lisa chip size, there's no way to make the Indivision snap on.

I'm going to contact AmigaKit for a replacement, but... it's something to look out for if you've got one of these boards in your 1200.

Problem component is at the top left of the Lisa chip, directly above the "R261A" printing.

I'm betting amigakit won't swap it out.  You made me get my motherboard out and look.

Can you grind away some of the plastic on the indivision connector?

Also, depending on how close it is, you might be able to desolder the resistor and move it over, then resolder.  Or you could remove it entirely and replace it with some wires and a different resistor.

Neither hack is nice.   :-(

This is the 3rd motherboard I've bought from AmigaKit, 2 of which were defective (anybody want to buy an NTSC 1200 board that gives green screens, or a PAL 1200 with no sound? ugh) so, I'm going to be upset if they don't swap it out. They probably will since they seem good about that if you notify them in time, but we'll see.

And no, not enough room to file the plastic without exposing the metal contacts on the Indivisions socket, and I don't have a soldering iron near small enough to work on that component.

Have you see this guide?

It might help you (or others).
Life begins at 100 MIPS!

Nice Ports on AmiNet!

I'm not taking a file to an expensive new piece of equipment. Worst case, this PAL board will go on ebay and AmigaKit will permanently lose a customer and I'll make do with using the boot menu to go into PAL mode. I'm hopeful they'll do a swap, but if not, it's their loss.

I used a bench grinder to trim the PCB of my IDE Express so it would fit in with the Inidivision.

I'm not sure how the law works over there. But here in europe you have the right, as a paying customer, to get a working product. And if not, you can send it back and get the money from them. So why put it on ebay ?

Greenscreen NTSC motherboard: Yeah, they offered to replace it, I couldn't get to the post office in time so I wrote it off.

Soundless PAL motherboard: No, it was in my possession for almost a year before I noticed it was broken. Also a write-off as I'm not going to ask for a replacement on something I had for a year.

Current PAL motherboard that doesn't work with Indivision: Yeah, I wrote them. This post was just to let people with these motherboards know that they'll have trouble using Indivision.

If there's a resistor near the HP Lisa chip, it's a rev.2b motherboard, and it's compatible with Indivision AGA 1200, just like all other A1200 motherboards are compatible.

The sockets of the first batch of flickerfixers were only filed down on the spot where this resistor is near. Since HP Lisa chips seem to have a wide variation in height, the second production run was already changed, and sockets were lowered 0,2mm total with power tools.

For the A4000d/CD32 version, we did this prior to production. I took pictures of the tools we've built/used to make the sockets fit perfectly:

Yeah, it is a 2B board. I don't have very fancy tools and I'm not really eager to start filing on something that cost as much as this did. If I can't get a replacement motherboard I'll probably either put the motherboard on ebay and live with the hassle of using the boot menu on my old NTSC board, or if my DCE scandoubler will fit, I'll probably sell the Indivision. I'd prefer to use the Indivision, but I'm not willing to risk damaging it trying to make it fit.

Don't make a fuzz about the motherboard - it's perfectly OK. Indivision isn't. Send it back under warranty, and either your reseller, or I will take care of it.

OK I'll talk to AmigaKit and see if they'll do a trade. Thanks.
