New Minimig Core?
« on: March 24, 2009, 04:22:01 PM »
Hi,

Does anybody know when/if a new Minimig Core is going to be released?

I am hoping that something can be done about the amount of characters a ADF file name can be, as currently it seems as if i am going to have to manually rename every single file on my SD card?

Does anybody know currently how many characters are allowed?

Its going to be take me ages!

Thanks

Current firmware is using FAT for the file-system, so you have the usual 8.3 DOS file name structure.  8 characters for filename, 3 for extension.  I also had to rename all my ADFs to short form reasonable names.  It's a thing we have to live with.

Future firmwares will most likely adhere to the current standard.  The way I see it, longer filenames are problematic because of two reasons:
1. The OSD cannot display lines longer than 16 characters
2. The PIC micro has very little memory, and a buffer for a long file-name would take a considerable chunk off it.

There *could* be some improvements in an upcoming ARM microcontroller replacement, should it support FAT95, but you'd have to buy the upgrade board when it's made available.  One can only speculate at this stage, until a release is made public.

Cheers!
Edwin

There's a handy untility that will rename all the files on your SD card for you (well, shorten them at least) and place them in alphabetical order.

If you can email me within the next 20 minutes at darrin01311 at aol dot com then I'll send it to you.  Be quick as I'm about to leave the office and then I'm off on the piss.

Thanks Darrin,

I will drop you an email for the software. :-)

Does anybody know if a new Core is going to be released?

I guess i just want to have really good compatiblity..i am not to worried about the extra drives and hard drive support as i only ever had a A500+!!

I have 2 versions of IK+ and both dont work, so im guessing the Minimig Core still isnt as it should be for games compatiblity yet? I am using the april 2008 version Core.

Thanks

Regarding IK+, you will find certain cracked cores that won't work while others do, but it is also worth trying different RAM configurations and ROMS.  I got almost everything I tried working using the same core you have with Kickstart 1.3 and 1MB Chip, 512KB Fast with the PAL core.

I have an IK+ ADF I can send you for testing with the SD Card software.

There will be another with some more bug fixes and an extra floppy drive for the unexpanded v1.1 board.  However, I have no timetable as Jakub seems to be busy working on multiple cores and probably has to cross port each bug fix.

In my understanding the next fpga core will be both PIC and ARM-replacement compatible. The ARM board will support 4 floppy drive and one harddisk. The Amiga chipset (inside the fpga) will auto detect the available drives, same as every real Amiga after power-up.

Jakub is indeed busy and will release the new core as soon as possible :-)

That's good news.  "One core fits all" makes life easy.  :-)

They're still "in testing" at the moment and Jakub is still tweaking the core.  Hopefully they'll be available soon as they're well worth it.

Sounds very intresting!

My Minimig arrived this friday from ASB Computer with PSU, AF2008 Premium and two competition pros and I'm still quite excited. Just updated it and re-reading all the topics on Minimig! :-)
