Apollo ZIV-GVP Impact II SCSI
« on: November 30, 2002, 11:37:26 PM »
Does anyone have or has had a GVP ImpactII SCSI running on an Apollo
ZIV ?
I've run out of ideas on options. The machine will not boot if I set
the GVP to AUTOBOOT,no pre-boot menu,no booting from DF0:.
If I try the Binddrivers approach it boots untll it reaches the
Binddriver command and then locks-up.
If I run Bindrivers after boot-up I get a Guru 'Apollo Daemon.Hardware
bus fault/access error'.
Any ideas on the cause and better still a solurion would be most
welcome.

Cheers

The only GVP board I've 'booted' from, was my former G-Force 030-40-4 in my A2000HD. I'm presently running a Blizzard 2060 with a GVP HC+ as a secondary SCSI controller.

° What is your CPU? (ie, do you have an accellerator?)
° Is the HDD in use known to be working and 'bootable'?
° Is the drive's ID set, and Termination correct?

I'm asking THIS because you havn't advised your FULL set-up, and your experience with SCSI devices.
Forgive my asking if you've prievious SCSI experience.

I bet it because the SCSI card requires Zorro II DMA which the ZIV board doesn't support.

The only way to get the GVP card working with the ZIV is to somehow disable the SCSI card's DMA support. Even if you do that you will find the transfer speeds horribly slow (like around 50Kb per second) as the CPU has to do the work, it is a similar situation to A2091 cards when installed in Amiga 4000D's due a hardware bug in the A4000.

If you were considering getting a SCSI CD burner etc. I'd suggest getting an IDE model unless you can find a SCSI card that works well without Zorro II DMA.
Sam460ex: PPC460ex/1GHz, 2GB RAM, 30GB SSD via on-board SATA-2, DVD-RW via USB, Radeon 5450 1GB PCIe, Catweasel Mk4 PCI, A4000 KB and Competition Pro CD32 Pad.
A4000D: 030/25MHz, 16MB RAM, Indivision Mk1, 8GB CF as HDD and IDE CD-ROM.

Amiga user since 1992.
