Random music related rantings.
« on: March 10, 2009, 04:55:17 PM »
Just a thought about the new Prodigy album after my first listen through. Basically the all the album tracks seem kind of formulaic Prodigy noise bar the last track which seems to be there as a potential money spinner for use in furniture sales adverts.

I'm a big fan of their work from The Experience to Fat Of The Land, but surely Liam Howlett can do better than this?

Also on a random note I've had Another Planet by the clown-step crew aka Pendulum, stuck in my head for the past week. I find the only way to get a tune stuck in your head out is to play it oddly enough.

I quite like the last track of the Prodigy album compared to the rest of it, but it seems so entirely out of place, and as I mentioned before, perfect sort of upbeat advert music.

It's just wrong though!!!!!11111oneoneoneoneone

Howlett has stated in the past, that he refuses to change the tools he uses to make music, becuase it would change the music he wirtes (my paraphrasing, perhaps with a little interpretation, as I can't remember his exact words). I believe that was referring to his use of Ensoniq sampling keyboards. While this may not still be the case, I did feel it was an indication that he wasn't looking to really looking to change his music in a big way.

I haven't heard the latest album, though I have enjoyed quite a bit of their previous work. I still like some of their early rave tunes. They had some pretty fresh elements, in a developing scene. Prodigy has seemed to release a fair few tunes which are very much on the same theme, in more recent years, though.
Good good study, day day up!

By the way, have you seen the MS Songsmith mashups on youtube? That is an alternative [d]punishment[/d] way to get a tune out of your head. I don't have time to find the links just now. Also, the official Songsmith add is quite a groaning laugh, imo.
Good good study, day day up!

Maybe it's one of those albums with which you find hidden depth after a few listens but the above statement was what it seemed like to my ears initially .

He has changed the way he makes music, I read about it in Future Music Magazine not long before Always Outnumbered Never Outgunned came out. He uses Cubase now to sequence his tracks and probably some VST plugins to get samples and old synth sounds in there.

The only sampling keyboard I remember being mentioned was a Roland V10, (I think) definitely some sort of Roland though.

One thing I can never fault are his production skills, always well balanced between bass and treble, never too much or too little of either. Often in say Trance/House music the bass is way too prevalent and I find that annoying.

For the record, excuse the pun, Liam uses three Roland W-30 keyboards... Just google it. I have one here and use it quite a bit, the 12bit resolution and analogue filters have quite a unique sound!

I cast no aspersions upon your abilities, I'm just very proud of the W-30 :-)
