A4000 does not support more than 2 megs of chip ram.

The sockets accepts 72 pin industry standard 32 or 36 bit page mode SIMMs. The four parity bits of the 36 bit modules are ignored and they function as simple 32 bit ones.

1 meg chip ram sounds odd. Check the chip ram jumper on the motherboard J213, the jumper should be set 1-2 for 2mb (2-3 is for 8 MB but it was never used).

Check the jumper as said.

Also, only a 2mb module will register as 2mb. Anything else will register as 1mb, no matter what the jumper is set to.

I always believed only double sided simms with 2MB or more will be seen as 2MB Chipram. Incorrect?

I thought that wasn't the case either (I'm sure I stuck a 4MB or 8MB in there and with the right jumper setting it was seen as 2MB), Arnljot, but my memory fades :-/

Either way, you have a PGA 68882 FPU coming your way :-)

Then please tell me why the 16mB module in my A4000 perfectly registers as 2 mB CHIP?
All the best,

Keep thrashing away at it.

I finally got my A4000 configured as I want it over the weekend so hopefully this will be the last time the case cover comes off (yeah right!).  :-)

http://i18.photobucket.com/albums/b134/darrin01311/A4000a.jpg

My last addition was to fit a CF card reader and a USB 2.0 port on the lower floppy drive bay cover for ease of access.

As is stands, the specs are as follows:
A4000 with GVP 68040 @ 40MHz
2MB Chip RAM, 16 MB Fast on mobo, 64MB on CPU card
CF card reader fitted to mobo IDE slot
Elbox IDE card in Zorro slot with:
     2 x 80GB hard drives (3 large SFS partitions each)
     CD ROM drive
Deneb USB 2.0 card in Zorro slot:
     internal port routed to front USB port
     Trendnet Ethernet dongle on rear for Internet
     USB DVD+-RW external drive
Cybervision 643D in Zorro slot:
     1024 x 768 display for Workbench & Internet
Internal Scan Doubler/Flicker Fixer
     Native & RTG displays routed to manual switch box
Emplant Apple Mac II card in Zorro slot:
     Haven't configured it yet, System 7 OS
PS2 mouse and keyboard adapters

I'm going to have to reinstall the OS as fitting the CD adapter has changed the main IDE adapter to SCSI2.device which causes the CD files system to throw a wobbler if the CF card is in place as it expects it to be SCSI.device.  With luck I can get AmiSys to work and give me a nice, pretty Workbench.

A2000, A3000, 2 x A1200T, A1200, A4000Tower & Mediator, CD32, VIC-20, C64, C128, C128D, PET 8032, Minimig & ARM, C-One, FPGA Arcade... and AmigaOne X1000.

I'm quite sure Commodore did ship some A4000 batches with 1 MB chip and 1 MB fast.

@ darrin

i was never able to get my A4000 to boot with a compact flash and a CDROM on the internal IDE.  It kept crashing.

I'd be interested in how you configured it to work.

As 2 MB modules are a little bit hard to get these days you can just put an 8 MB module in there. Make sure the chipram jumper is set to 8 MB to make the module is recognised as 2 MB ChipRAM otherwise it is only recognised as 1 MB.
Not really interesting, but it`s there.

@da9000
@HyAmi
@Dandy

Thanks da9000. Looking forward to it.

Now, on the RAM issue. I can´t say why it works for Dandy. But what I can say is that the manual states that the socket only accepts 1MB or 2MB modules. Also I´ve experienced the 1MB problem my self with a 4MB module in the ChipRAM socket.

Dandy, if the 16MB module works for you - good for you :)

Amiga.serveftp.net confirms that 4MB chips and 8MB chips can be used. So I dunno know what I did wrong with my 4MB module that worked as FAST, but not as Chip
