Dead key on A600
« on: March 09, 2009, 04:55:45 AM »
I finally put together the A600 I got from ebay a while back.  I have it booting into 3.1 from a 4gb compact flash.  All seems well except... the M key.  The M key appears to be dead.  Is there a standard fix for a dead key that doesn't involve replacing the entire keyboard?  thanks.

Yes.

If it's only that one key and not a column or row of keys, then reseating the keyboard's flat cable might not help a lot.

Wipe the rubber under the key with a piece of paper from your printer, until the rubber is no longer shiny.

Clean the dust off the membrane inside the keyboard.

Write with a pencil on the pad below the M key.

If you want to make a mess, then why not. The problem with the graphite approach is, that it also wears out with use pretty quick.

Wiping with paper to refresh the rubber's surface, then making sure the plastic membrane is free of grease and dust will yield long lasting results.

or use conductive ink (very expensive, though)..

BTW, if its not a row of key, don't move the keyboard connector.
Better sorry than worry.
