Does anybody have problems with "R-Type"?
« on: March 06, 2009, 09:04:49 PM »
I have successfully send dozens of ADF's back to disks for play on my Amiga 500 using Amiga Explorer and serial cable, but R-Type just does not want to work. I am testing with the current available TOSEC images, and have tried them all. They all exhibit the same issue:

Goes to title screen of the game and I press fire to start...and then, black screen and nothing. I have tried using degrader, using an Amiga 500 with actual 1.2 and 1.3 roms installed, removing all external memory (and trapdoor memory) and external drives...even tried it on three seperate Amiga 500's. Just will not work and exhibits the same issue every time.

I spoke with someone in another forum and he tested the exact images on his Amiga 600 (softkicked to 1.3) and it works fine. I don't have an Amiga 600, but do have a 500 with 3.1 kick, so I tried the game with that machine softkicked to 1.3. Same deal! Argh...

I *know* I used to run this game on my Amiga 500 back in the late eighties and it DID work. Does anybody know what can be going on here?

Sounds like you have a PAL version...  That's what I would get, worked fine up to title screen but game would just go to a black screen on NTSC machine.

If I switch my A500 into PAL mode it works fine.   I installed a switch on the back of my Amiga 500 so I can switch it between PAL and NTSC.

You are probably right. I wonder if it would make a difference if I used it on a monitor (going through the A520 on all of these). I have one coming, so I'll try again when it arrives. Thanks for the info!

Hey, who is this other member on another forum?  Oh yeah, it was me ;)

I actually have a kickswitcher in my 600, so it was firing up on a real 1.3 ROM and 1MB chip.  For the record, it *is* a PAL A600 so it's possible it's an NTSC issue - I hadn't thought of it.  I should fire it up on a 1200 or a NTSC 500 to see if maybe that's the issue.

Monitor probably won't make much difference...  Machine has to be outputting PAL signals.   You may be able to hack your system so it's switchable between PAL & NTSC.  Some motherboard even let you do it via software.   I had a Revision 6 motherboard so I just soldered a small switch on the proper jumper location.  Now I can just switch it between the two modes as required.  Of course, your monitor would have to be capable of handling both modes!

Maybe you can find a NTSC version of R-type...

If he has an ECS based 500, he *should* be able to use Degrader or something similar to boot into PAL (provided he has a display that can display it).  I did this for years.
