External FDD always clicks... MCP and anticlick don't help.
« on: March 06, 2009, 08:50:16 AM »
Hi everyone,
More an annoyance than anything else... But, I had a 1010 external floppy laying around, that never worked. So, I figured I'd take it apart and see what's up. Well, with a bit of tuner cleaner in the write protect detection switch, it works fine now... Except, the thing insists on clicking when no disk is in the drive. I've tried using MCP's trackdisk prefs, the prog. 'Anticlick' .. It still clicks... Any ideas?

i use Nclick,it works, put it in wb startup, in your user-startup put the command  " Nclick ? " reboot it will auto detect any floppy drive connected,

The drive is probably just incompatible with noclick. The documentation with most noclick tools states that some drives won't become silent and you shouldn't enable noclick for those drives.

Th NoClick function works by stopping the heads cycling between cyliners 0 and 1 to detect the change. Instead, the heads are constantly pushed to 0 (or -1, I can't remember). Most drives recognise this as an illegal head move and don't move the heads, but some will try to carry out the move blindly, forcing the heads against the stop at the end of its track. This can damage those drives over time, so you shouldn't use it.

Hey guys, thanks much for the advice.
Yeah, I know I should just keep a disk in the drive, but my WB screen gets so cluttered as it is ...  :-D
