OS Where can i get one??

I was wanting yo know where i could get an amiga os for my computer

Ive got
2 a500's with the a520 vid adaper]
2 a600's one with a hdd laptop
The other i'm putting in a hdd from an imb think pad 3.2gb
I want to know more about this amiga os and where i can sourse it from .
I got win/aue but i want a full os without windows
I also have linux
Ive got a lot of old computers many 20 yrs old this year (amstrad 464, 6128)
All in perfect working order

Please help i'd appreciate it

Hi Sam,

There are a few Kiwis with Amigas - I think there's even one that's a developer, though whether he develops for AOS4 or Amige DE escapes me at the moment.

Contact Doug Moir (sales@AnythingAmiga.com), he will give you details of other Kiwi Amigans. I don't think there are any Kiwi dealers, but I could be wrong. I think there is a club in Auckland. In any case, I know Doug has several AmigaOne orders from NZ, so he should be able to help you.

At the moment we are busy organising the OS4 Roadshow for the Eastern States of Oz. There may be something happening across the Tasman, also.

Well, I'd say it's pretty obvious that he wants it for his Amigas.
As far as where to get it, there are various stores that will do business by post from UK, US, or Germany,etc.  Also, try ebay and other second hand sites.
First, you must determine what rom version you have in your machines.  If original, your A500s may have 1.2 or 1.3.; if upgraded they could be 2.0 or 3.1 roms (I think the 3.0 roms only ever came out for the A1200 and A4000)  I think the A600s came with 2.0 roms, but again could have been upgraded with 3.1 roms. (2.05 roms to be technical, compared with 2.04 roms for A500 and A2000)
Second, which Amiga OS do you want? 1.3 works with 1.3 and 1.2 roms, 2.0 and 2.1 works with 2.0 roms. And 3.1, 3.5, and 3.9 works with 3.1 roms.  I think 3.9 requires at least an 020 processor though, can't remember about 3.5. 8-)

AmigaOS is still not free, but you can legally download it, if you own an amiga. If those amigas are fully orginal, then you need: AmigaOS/workbench 1.2/1.3 for the a500, workbench 2.x for the a600. try searching around on google for the adf files.

There is a little prob though, since the pc floppy controller is incompitable with the amiga one, you gotta find a way to transfer it over to the amiga via a  serial/null modem cable.
So i think it would be easier to just buy it from somewhere.

I bought OS3.5 last year from a store here in Wellington.  AFAIK they still stock some Amiga stuff.  Check their website:

Be it greed, be it legalese, but you aren't entitled to WB disks if you didn't receive them with the Amiga.

You must buy the originals somewhere or perhaps receive them as a gift from someone who doesn't need them any more.

That's pretty old by PC standards... what you want is either Linux, or an old copy of MS-DOS. Don't let anyone talk you into buying Windows NT, 2000 or XP - those are very nice OSs, but your computer will crawl with them installed.  I suggest looking at 2nd hand shops, you should be able to get something there (Linux you can just download if you have the bandwidth).  The OS you buy will be determined by what you want to do with it - if you want to run old games, go with MS-DOS 6.x.  To run a firewall or a fileserver, Linux is pretty good.  To run other stuff, either Linux or DOS, depending on exactly what you want to do.
There are other OSs, but the amount of software available for them is pretty small.

I just remembered, there's something called Open-DOS, which is supposed to be 100% compatible with MS-DOS.  It's not Microsoft, but it is SCO...

Not to make the unpopular recommendation or anything... But I have had decent success with Win2k Pro on my Micron Transport XPe... Intel 150MHz MMX, 80MB RAM. Win98SE will also work well.

Any version of Linux would also perform decently. I wouldn't recommend DOS, since that's way more machine than DOS was meant for. QNX may work, if it likes your video chip. Likewise Amithlon would work, since a harddrive install is centered around QNX (that is, IF you can get your hands on it).

And last, but certainly not least, AROS would be fun to play with on it... Tho harddrive install is not yet available.

Hell, if you're feeling adventurous, you can always install Win98SE with a minimum install... Then use WinUAE in place of explorer... Change the SHELL= line in system.ini to WinUAE.exe  :-D

It's the amount of memory that hinders the original poster's ability to run NT based Windowsen. For win2k you need at least 128MB RAM for it to be nice to use.. The more the better.

With today's RAM prices it's often a good idea to buy as much RAM as you can fit in that old PC. It may seem like overkill to have 512MB RAM, but you'll get more out of that old box if it doesn't have to swap to it's slow disk all the time.

Please have a look at AROS. I have to warn you that it is not usable a your day2day OS.

Like I said, it runs just fine on mine with 80MB.
