WHDLoad compatability
« on: February 28, 2009, 02:38:04 AM »
Has anyone compiled any kind of list of WHDLoad games that work with different setups? I'll start adding some of my experiences here if no one has.

For starters, my favorite game, Elite Advanced, worked fine on my A2000 with OS 3.1, but it won't work with OS 3.9 :boohoo:

And no WHDLoad games work on my A2000 without enabling the NOMEMREVERSE option, since I added memory to my GVP 040.

Here's some of the results with my A2000 with OS 3.9 (and the NOMEMREVERSE option enabled);

3D pool - OK
Deluxe Galaga - OK
Lemmings Disk 1 - OK
Wings of Fury - OK
Alien Breed - Hangs up with black screen
Alien Breed II - OK
Alien Breed SE - Hangs with black screen
Zaxon 1mb - Starts and then gives "Illegal Instruction ($10)
Elite Advanced - Garbage graphics (tried all kinds of tool type options)
Frontier - OK
Jimmy White Snooker - OK
Wings - OK

If there is no other list available, I'll update this post with new ones I've tried, and any tool type options I've used sucessfully or unsuccesfully.

I'm guessing that some games just plain worn't work with newer hardware and software, so if you know of any of them please educate me :-D

Is there not a huge list on the WHDLoad website?

Anyway, I've found both Cannon Fodders work perfectly without changing the setup on my A1200 060/66 with many, many add-ons.

I was thinking of a list showing what tooltype settings were needed for various hardware configurations and operating systems. So far, about 50-60% of non-AGA games do not work on my A1200 with Apollo 1240, and about 80-90% of AGA games do not work.

Some idea of what tooltypes to change for certain errors would be nice. Here's an example below of some of the many errors I get on my A1200 with Apollo 1240 and OS 3.9.

WHDLoad is just dog gone near worthless on my A1200 the way it is.

Bansheee AGA;
Exception "Access Fault" ($7008)
PC = $2EF19A (ExpMem $ 19EA)
Long Write to $2FF0140

Pinball Fantasies AGA:
Black screen of death

Pinball Illusions AGA:
Exception "Access Fault" ($7008)
PC = $2E87FC4 (Task 'exec.library', ExpMem $ 15FC4)
Word Read from $222874C6

Deluxe Galaga AGA:
Exception "Access Fault" ($7008)
PC = $2EF3A02 (ExpMem $ 1A02)
Long Read from $2FF2550

There appear to be several tootypes that could effect things, and the combinations of those tooltypes makes it extremely difficult to figure out if ANY of the combinations will work.

I'm very interested in putting my A1200 in a tower with a Mediator, but it won't be worth shelling out that kind of coin with the dismal results I'm getting with WHDLoad.

I also had this problem with my GVP 1230 II setup and CF card as HD. In the afternoon I test it on my Blizzard 1260.

Try the following:

- Change your maxtransfer to 0x0000FE00.
- Install the latest version of WHDLoad version 16.9.

If the game still crash you could download older versions of WHDLOAD and put it on your hard disk, like WHDLOAD169.

When it fails you simply use an older version.

Just to add to the above. I had problems with an A600 and a CF card that brought up a lot of requesters with odd errors. The games worked fine on 4 other setups. Changing the MaxTransfer to a different value solved the problem.

Sorry, maybe this is a dumb question..
What happens to the data on the partition if I change maxtransfer? Change maxtransfer only on boot or game partition, or both?

Taken from the WHDLoad FAQ ...

"Especially a 68040/060 CPU or some turboboards/other hardware may cause problems. Try to turn off all extra hardware and try to start the install again"

Maybe WHDLoad just doesn't like your '040's. Using the latest version of WHDLoad, yes?

Also try running WHDLoad from the CLI and see what error message it returns (if any). It may help to narrow down the problem.

Come on, guys. This was on the frontpage for days lately...

I overlooked that link on the front page. I've been preoccupied with other Miggy projects because last week I got OS 3.9, Indivision, and an Apollo 1240, and I've been overwhelmed sorting things out and getting them to work properly.

Does the MaxTransfer come into play if the games are stored on CF in a PCMCIA adapter? Doe the MaxTransfer need to bet set on all partitions, including the boot partition? Do you have to reformat the boot partition and reinstall everything?

I set MaxTransfer for DH2 and reformatted it and copied some games from CF to DH2, and installed WHDLoad 16.9, and I was able to run a couple games that wouldn't run before, but most still will not run.

Is anyone else using an Apollo 1240 with any better success than I am having?

I read that. I'm still not sure if MaxTransfer needs to be changed on the boot partition, if the WHDLoad games are on another partition which has had MaxTransfer set correctly. And I'm still unclear about CF cards, especially in a PCMCIA adapter.

But I will go ahead and set MaxTransfer for my boot partiton, and assume that I will need to reformat and reinstall the OS and everything. I'm just not ready to do that yet because I just did it the night before last.

Thanks for the info.

I changed maxtransfer and didn't loose any data. But i cannot guarantee that it will work for you so if you have anything important on the partition, back it up first!
