Best text editor for developer?
« on: February 27, 2009, 02:07:19 PM »
Hi all,
I'm new to Amiga, and just got a Sam440. I'm now looking to get a nice text editor for it, and so far Cubic IDE looks good, but I'd like to hear some recommendations for alternatives before I splash out.

Basically, I'll be editing C/C++ and Python code, maybe Ruby. I consider syntax highlighting essential, a function list highly desirable, and although I think I'm hoping for too much here, I'd love to be able to open files directly from FTP and SFTP servers.

I'd like to try out CygnusEd, but I can't find a demo anywhere.

Any other suggestions? I'm happy to pay for one, but I'd like to be able to get a 30-day demo or something first.

Basically I'm looking for an Amiga version of TextWrangler... And also, if I'm paying for an editor, I'd like to get one which is actively developed, not just to get updates but to support a developer who supports the platform.

Any thoughts?

Cheers

Garry

There's also CodeBench, targeted specifically for 4.1, but it's still in early development.

I think you'll definitely find something you like in Cubic or CygnusEd.

Thoughts? Now that the Atari wars have died, maybe we can start a traditional Vi vs. EMACS flamewar in Amigaland. Vim was originated on and developed exclusively on the Amiga for years, you know   :argue:

Check out FTP_mount, been around for years, and would work with any editor, even stinkin MicroEmacs  :-)

I'll definitely give Vim a go.

I've tried FTP Mount, or at least one program which mounts FTP volumes on the Workbench, for that it works fine, but the volumes don't show up in file requesters and if I drag a file to an editor on the dock, it does not work, I forget the exact error though and I'm not in front of the Amiga right now.
