screenmode test on the coming uae integration for aros
« on: February 23, 2009, 02:39:38 PM »
I saw on aros exec that o1i had posted a work in progress on the aros archive site. He is working on the uae integration and had implemented Picasso96 screen modes. That had to be tested so I downloaded it with aros repository downloader AAEDT that comes with vmwaros. After starting the janus-uae file it starts the janusuae interface and kickrom, system and work had to be reconfigured and saved in janusuae prefs. After that I downloaded the picasso96.lha, and installed that. Tested final writer 5 in 800*600 that was a comfortable size on the 1200*1024 resolution I run aros in. I also put up a picture on workbench running on 1024*768. I can’t wait for this to be finished with full integration.

.

and here the workbench

I'm not so sure what is so special about this. Picasso96 support is something like 10+ years old. It certainly doesn't bring UAE integration any closer.

And what's so special? I could do that years ago on Windows, even sharing the clipboard :-)

E.g. AmigaOS3.x running on MorphOS UAE:

UAE running inside UAE (with picasso96 too):

Piru, Crumb, it’s a work in progress and I manage to get it going and thought it could be interesting to see. I have absolutely no idea how this is going to work when completed. Also I had a vague notion that these screen modes was not supported with jit in Aros uae before, but I could be completely wrong I have not studied this closer. I’m a user and very much looking forward to the completion of this project.
But right now the focus is pointed at the painfully imminent browser. The tension is almost…….

Hi Piru, it is about retargeting the Picasso96 calls to the native AROS intuition. That way one would open UAE in AROS, and then select the UAEGFX mode which would cause all 68K GUI operations to function in the Native AROS environment, thus hiding the Emulator!

Since this is the preferred route for 68k emulation in AROS, this work in progress is a step closer :-)

Good luck with that.

And I still fail to see how this makes it much easier. Rendering graphics is just one small (and easy) part of the problem.

Don't forget that, the idea for AROS is not to have 68k and Native apps interacting... they will always run in their own environments. This keeps the 68k apps "sandboxed" away from the native apps. This is not "true integration" as MOS and OS4 is used to... libraries and devices etc are not going to be shared between environments and a full 68k OS install will be required... but if you need and have 68k apps then you should already have a working 68k OS somewhere :-)

-Edit- For me I would probably simply snapshot my A1200 HD into this UAE and then use that. I have that running in UAE already... My 68k Amiga needs are now fixed in time, and won't be expanded, it would be nice to have access to that, but any future Amiga stuff I use will be AROS based.

The idea is simply to allow 68k apps to run in the same user environment (and filesystem and clipboard), so the user can use the 68k apps with native apps. The idea is very close to how Apple solved the OS9.x Classic apps running on PPC OSX 10.x problem... and has the same advantages and disadvantages as that.

I just have to update this. (Please remember that this is just a little report of the work in progress. It is very unstable but extremely interesting development. I read a new post at o1l’s blog on how to start the mysterious janus deamon and how to get a glints on how things is going to work.

I started the janus uae. In screen modes gave it one of the new screen resolutions. Then I just  clicked on the janus deamon that earlier I placed directly in extras/amibridge/system/, and oke’ed.

The janus uae window is now open with my classicWB. And now… I click on the system drawer on the classicWB. And it opens.  AND YOU CAN GRABB THIS WINDOW AND MOVE IT OUTSIDE THE UAE WINDOW into the AROS DESKTOP…

o1i, man, myth, hero, then this is finished with the fusing of AROS with UAE, AROS will have the amigas gigantic software collection naturally at its disposal. It will be the ultimate uae incarnation.

If now AROS could fuse with Anubis to make it easier with the hardware.

How is the Anubis situation??
Does anyone know any plans??
Is it two separate things or will it come together in an AROS ANUBIS??

Has anyone seen how well these two words go together?

Lets keep Anubis out of this thread, start another one if you must... but people like A1260 get very confused when AROS and Anubis are mentioned in the same thread. :-)
