WINUAE/UAE port to the Playstation 2
« on: September 10, 2003, 12:49:32 PM »
Hello

How many PS2 lovers on here...

Get yourself a copy of BlackRhino Linux for the PS2 (Playstation 2)

I've got a working version of UAE...
only drawback is memory, only 16Megs...

I've tested 56 games on it... some work and some sadly dont.

UAE had been ported to the Dreamcast, Xbox... Before I started thinking about the PS2..

Making it work on the PS2, this was'nt easy..
I had help... Special drivers had to be created...

PS2 Keyboard/Mouse/Joypad -- Works

Memcards. -- Games can boot (7.8 Megs of storge)

USB Slots, -- Limited, Plans for USB floppy, Printer Etc

Ethernet adapter -- Works well (np)

PS2 Harddrive -- FileSystem problems... ?being worked on?

(PS2 controller) Right stick moves the mouse pointer etc, can be used in games to like a normal ami joystick.

Games can be saved to memcard and booted from

I've burnt I copy onto Cdrom and called it PS2UAE.
This will run on any ps2, along as its mod chiped to skip the boot ID...

Damn, well done!

But, let me get this straight. Does it boot of on it's own, or does it require the PS2 Linux kit?
Anyway is the only way

That's what i was thinking Karlos, they look kinda cool, they are getting cheaper by the minute, it would confound all your mates with PS2s when they see you running AmigaOS or Linux on the machine that they just use for Vice City etc....

I started off, using the full linux kit... you can get it from me... aswell as sourceforge or the offical ps2-linux site....

From www.playstation.com or just follow the link http://stargate.ukscifi.net/servers/

you can locate the Blackrhino folder with the current linux image...

you can chat to me about this anytime on irc.ukscifi.net, my Nick is Seti

I`m working on it now so it will only boot to UAE, only using what is really needed from the linux shell...

I`ll keep you upto date

Wow! This is great! I have a chipped PS2, and love it [best games machine at the moment]. If you're finished making a bootable CD, I'd like to try it!

So how does UAE hold up with such low RAM and CPU specs? I'd like to see it, but last time I had a chance to run Linux on a PS2 I was not too impressed with the speed or the fact that you had to boot off DVD, or is there a way around that?

Where can i get a dreamcast port, i have never seen it, although if it exists i doubt it would be of any use, as it would be too damn slow, same as the ps2 i suspect.

The Dreamcast port was'nt done my me, I take no credit for the port in anyway..

And yes it was slow, with major storage problems.

So look on the net, some emu sites might have it...

So why the PS2, I wanted to play my old miggy games on it.. Turrican2, and of course Xenon 2,
I've also got my eyes set on the Gamecube
when more hardware becomes availble.

As for speed, you would get below A500 speed on a dreamcast. fine for playing games and a very basic 1.3 - 3.0 wb... due to memory issus.

(Had to currect where I had the word above , I ment below, incase anyone wonders about the posts that follow on from this one)

As for the PS2UAE this runs allot faster, I`d say,
the same kinda speed as an 060... maybe faster when i sort the boot loader out and without so much linux support needed, (allowing more memory for the emu), also being able to run from PS2HD without glitchs, other then the DVD rom...

PS2 is not clocked like a PC, Mips... remember..
the first build had worked better when i dreamed off.

I also ported Mame (PS2Mame) sometime ago
(this doesnt work so well, so i gave in),

There is another Mame port out there, from what I know, Its a good job well done...

I've also used a PS2 as a chat server running Unrealircd Ircd 3.2 (beta12)...  (this was`nt something Sony would have had in mind, but it made some people laugh)

Enough for now... any ideas welcome...

Well i would really have to see the port to believe, as my dc struggles with snes, megadrive and mame emus, and my ps2 just about runs megadrive game but snes and mame are dog slow,  i dont think (my opinion) that ps2 would work very well with use.
