Video cables
« on: February 15, 2009, 03:04:15 PM »
I have an Amiga branded Microvitec 1438S monitor which has a captive cable with a 23pin amiga video connector on the end.

This cable is a little bit too short though and I would like to replace it with a longer cable, with a high density 15pin connector (VGA type).

The problem I have is that I am not sure what kind of cable I need to buy. Is it possible to by the cable on its own (sans connectors), so I can connect one end into the 1438 and put a VGA connector on the other end?

I have no idea what the cable on its own would be called, or where I can get it from.

On the subject of 1438 monitors...

Has anyone ever tried to remove the back cover off one? I just tried now and no matter how much I forced it, the top of it wouldn't move. The bottom of the case came away nicely. I was just wondering if I was missing something.

I didn't want to damage it, but it does now have quite a few screwdriver marks one it.

I hope you know of the dangers that live inside - even disconnected - monitors...

Having replaced a few (broken) monitor cables, my advice is to keep the original cable and build an extension instead. Replacing the plugs on the internal end can be a major pain, even more so when space is tight.

I suppose extending it would be doable. I'd still need to find suitable cable. I suppose I could just stick a VGA connector on the end of the current cable and get a VGA extension lead.

I just don't want it to be messy as this is what I have now:

Does anyone know what this type of cable is called and whether it is possible to buy it on it's own? I'm really stuck otherwise.

Could you not get an Amiga RGB - VGA adpapter and then a VGA to VGA extender lead. I know it's 2 items but I doubt if you could get one lead that suits the purpose.

I have never come across an adaptor that would enable me to connect an Amiga monitor to a VGA display, so i would probably still have to make one, which would involve making more 23 pin connectors out of 25 pin connectors.

Apologies but my suggestion won't work as the adapter needs to be Amiga male to svga male.
My M1438S monitor came with such a lead so they must be available. Amigakit might be able to make you a custom lead if you contact them.

To convert a Microvitec 23-pin back to a VGA 15-pin port, you should use our ADAMON002 product shown here:

This is a Male 23-pin to Male 15-pin adapter.
