GVP 030 Combo not showing RAM on A2000
« on: February 09, 2009, 05:54:58 PM »
Hi all,

I've got the GVP 030-22mhz Combo accelerator w/ only the surface mounted 2mb.

No matter what I do I cannot get this 2mb to show in sysinfo.  The mem in my commodore 2058 ram card shows up fine as does the 1mb chip ram on the A2000 rev. 6.2 motherboard but not the GVP ram.  The card, however shows up in sysinfo as 68030.

Thanks,
Tim

Maybe try a different program to see your Ram?  Maybe Scout?  SysInfo misses a lot of things.  It always tells me that my 060 is an 040.  I have also had it not recognize Ram being present that other programs could see.

I too have that GVP combo card. And it has 1mb soldered directly though. It's either 1mb or 4mb - not 2mb (that I have ever seen).

You've got a jumper problem mate! Those cards have a ton of jumpers on them. If they are not set properly, the RAM will not autoconfig or be recognised at all.

Check out this link to get the proper jumper settings. If you still continue to have problems, LMK and I'll zap over or post a hi-res scan of my card.

J12 I think may be your problem...

Correct your are! It is 1mb, I mis-spoke when I thought it was 2mb.

I will try messing with the jumpers some more.  BTW, if you could zap over a scan that would be great.

Another issue that seems funny.  I just put a ROM switcher on this machine also.  When I boot up 1.3, everything seems ok but when I boot to 2.0, I get a info screen that I assume is the GVP early-startup or something that says 'bad card' or the like. I will post exactly what shows up when I get home.

you have to read the manual.  if you need the manual pm.
http://amiga.resource.cx/exp/combo
i have scanned copy of manual and i also have hardcopies (cost of shipping + nominal fee).  nice to have original manual if your card never came with it.  i can also provide latest rom version and boot disk.  it would be recommended to use rom 3.1 (seen also 1.3 systems with that card) - pm me.

as far as the screen with bad card check the orientation of rom.  could also be bad prom chip.  bah, lots of crap on ebay these days.  few sellers bother checking what they sell don't they?  thus, you'll appreciate the ones that do.

According to manual, Jumper 12 does the work for the board with 1 MB.  J12 off means all RAM in banks 1 and 2 will be mapped as Extended Memory.  J12 ON means RAM in bank 1/2 is assigned to Auto-config.
If you have 2058 then you will likely need to do J12 OFF unless you remove 2058.  Amiga Architecture supports up to 8MB of Autoconfig memory.  note 40 & 50 mhz boards have 4mb as factory installed (surface mounted).
This is all in user manual and you may want to buy one off me.

DO NOT MESS WITH THE JUMPERS UNLESS YOU KNOW WHAT YOU ARE DOING.  YOU MAY DAMAGE THE BOARD.

Check the manual for Gforce 030, especially the Jumper 12 and the default jumper settings based on whether you have 25, 40 or 50 mhz combo board.

Scanned a few years back - quality of scans could be better today.

Hi, today I received a GVP Combo 030 25mhz, and I have the same problem - the 1mb onboard is not recognised.

I have changed the jumper position of J12 to ON and OFF but it made no difference.

Are there any further suggestions to fix the problem?

Many thanks,
Matt.

I have had limited success, by changing some jumpers, the board will now show the 1mb as "BAD". The system cant use the memory, but it knows it is there. Interesting to note that any other Zorro memory cards I now add to the A2000 also come up as "BAD" when those memory cards work perfect without the 030 plugged in.

I might add that the A2000 has kickstart 2.0, and the GVP 030 has ROM  version 3.(something). Is GVP ROM version 4.xx required for Kickstart 2 and above?
