Upgrading Cyberstorm MkII

My 4000D works fairly well with my CS MkII-040/40 but it would be a lot nicer with a faster CPU.

A few years ago I got two 060's from a friend that he salvaged from scrapped industrial robot controller cards. Never been able to test if they work alright but I hope at least one of them do. It would be horrible to modify the card and realise none of them work and then revert it to take toe 040 again!

These 060's has this written on them:

If my research is correct these are the good rev 6 that can run up to 100MHz?

Question is, how fast would I be able to get one running om my CS MkII?

I had a link once to a site with instructions on how to modify the MkII for 060 but I can't find it. Anyone has a link or the instructions how to do it?

I would aim for 66MHz but you could try for faster.

Erm, if you use a slot for the processor, then modifying the rest of the board is not much trouble. Also if your 060s are faulty, you can always buy another one off ebay (just a hint ). :lol:

They are to expensive in my view. If the ones I have aren't in working order then it's not gonna happen. Unless I suddenly get rich I won't buy a 060.

I've tried to get them tested but I find noone that's willing to help me with that so I guess I have to give it a go someday..

I guess I'll settle for 66 if I do it. Better safe than sorry. It's only the change to a 66 MHz oscillator that needs to be different compared to that instruction?

Correct. I recommend soldering in a socket rather than soldering in the xtal then you can replace it.

Remember if you put an xtal in with the wrong orientation it will break the xtal so take care.

See if you can find a decent heatsink for the 060 which has a retention mechanism which fits well (486?, perhaps the old one off your 040?) Use the RIGHT amount of thermal paste. Not too much. Then if you want to go to 80MHz later you can without having to remove the CPU.

I know about the crystals. I managed to kill one or two when I tried to make the VXL-030/50 work in my A500... :p

I've built enough computers to know about how much paste is needed. I think I have some old cooler that I can use as well somewhere.

But, we'll see if I dare try without knowing if the cpu's are ok.
