New old stock?
« on: February 05, 2009, 03:30:26 PM »
Hey guys, im contemplating taking the plunge and getting a "new old stock" 1200 from amigakit, is that a good idea? ive heard things about the disk drives being iffy on the amiga technologies 1200, is that correct? and finally, do the amiga technology 1200's have the 3.1 ROM as standard because im really into trying out OS 3.9 but want to maintain the warranty seal on the system. cheers

oh yeah and if anyone has a remedy for continuously buying parts off ebay that i cant actually afford... :)

@maff20

Amiga tech. 1200's have 3.1 as standard but you'll need more ram (or ideally an accelerator) to run os3.9.  As for the floppy drive I'm not entirely sure.  I know that some of them were indeed dodgy but I don't think it was all.  Best to give amigakit a call, I'm sure they'll give you an honest assessment of the drives in the 1200's they sell.
Drives in second hand 1200's can be very dodgy indeed! Believe me I know from experience  :lol:
So I'd recommend the "new old stock" option if you can afford it.

I have a nos amiga from amigakit. Its great and i love it. yep comes with 3.1 rom . as for the disk drive it can be a minor issue with the copy protection on some of the later games that came out. however, i have never had this problem so its not been an issue; but its apparently caused by them using a modified pc floppy drive (allegedly) i have been told. but then its never been an issue. Also if you are going to be using a HDD and whdload it not an issue at all anyway.
best of luck
oh and i have found amigakit really really helpful and friendly too

I also have a NOS A1200 from AmigaKit.  Great machine and AmigaKit was great with support.  The internal drive hasn't been a problem for me.  Do talk to AmigaKit about your concerns and they'll give you the straight story.  For me, I've moved disks created on the A1200 to my A3000 and 4000 without a problem.

I'd look for an accelerator and more memory.  I've managed to find a Blizard '030 and 128 MB of memory and a scsi which helps perk the machine up!

I'd also recommend adding the Easy ADF package to the purchase so you can easily move files from your main computer to the A1200, and a PCMCIA network adapter if you'd like to put in on the net (after you find an accelerator).

ROTFLMAS! :lol: :lol: :lol:

Who do you think still exists to honor the warranty seal?

Unless you are thinking of AmigaKit themselves for whatever warranty they offer, that seal is worthless and probably already broken.
How are you helping the Amiga community? :)

Hey guys, thank you all for your opinions. im pretty sure im going to go for a nos 1200 now. im in the process of fixing up some old rigs for sale on ebay to finance this venture and FINGERS CROSSED ive landed myself a Blizzard 68060 to fit in my new rig. should be swanky, finally the rig i dreamed of as a 13 year old boy....

@amigadave, obviously i wasnt expecting to phone commodore to come and fix my rig :lol:. the question of the seal was mearly for other peoples peice of mind if i ever decide to sell the rig at a later date.
