IBrowse2.4 freezes on a '030 1200 64M ram with OS3.5
« on: February 04, 2009, 08:20:31 PM »
Hi folks,

I'm (trying) to run IB2.4 with either AmiTCP3 or Miami and although I can get IB to run more often than not after the initial default page any web site selected iether via shortcuts or via a search engine will cause a sytem freeze with a $800000D error message and the option to reboot etc.
After a lot of playing with the number of connections etc. I found that if I disable Javascript support in IB prefs I can prevent these freezes?

Query 1 If I run the same IB2.4 with Javascript support active on my '040 4000 with 16M ram and OS3.5 I do not have this problem (i.e. $800000D freeze). Any ideas which files/libs etc might be contributing to the problem with javascript on the 1200, or is this a HW problem to do with the PCMCIA N/A?

Query 2 Anyone know how to install IB2.3 documentation in a IB 2.4 drawer, I have down loaded and exploded the lha file but if I use the installer it wont install 'cause its looking for IB2.3!

many thanks, Ian

Update -

Query 1
I managed to get  sopme additional info from a AmiTCPLog report as follows :-
"m clalloc max amount of memory already used (255120 bytes)
sana read (enet)
not enough mbuffs"
So I will try to find a setting for mbuffs and try to chanage its value - guess it must be a parameter in the sana device "enet".

Query 2
I downloaded a democopy of IB2.3 from a mirror site and installed that into a tempy folder ran the IB2.3 document installer and bingo! now have the document files.

just thought I would let you know, Ian

Thanks for the heads up on the documentation installer - clearly we made it too intelligent :-).  Given that the docs have not yet been updated for 2.4, obviously this isn't desired behaviour - I'll fix that asap.

Regarding your 030, you will need to re-install IBrowse using that hardware... If you are using the installation that you made using your 040 then the 040 codecs and jslib will have been installed and these won't work on an 030 since they use 040 specific instructions.

I have the same problems with IBrowse 2.4 on my 4000D/040 with OS3.9 and I have the correct library versions installed.

Only a few sites, like this one, works with javascript turned on. On most sites my comp either freezes or crashes if javascript is enabled.

Download SmartCrash 1.3.3 from here...

http://www.iki.fi/sintonen/sw.html

It will give more info on crashes. SmartCrash will display even more info if SegTtacker (Aminet) is running.

Hello again folks, another update,

First, many thanks for all yr feedback so far, glad to see the Ib2.3 docs installer has been changed and I have managed to install "Smartcrash and Segtracker".

Using the above SW tools this is a dump of my latest IB2.4 crash (hope there is someone (or a few) who can explain what it means), although it does seem to be tied up with processing Javascript. Dump follows:-

You are getting an Exception D from Ibrowse while it's using the javascript.library. I believe this exception D should not be used on either an '040 or '030 so your memory is probably getting corrupted. Another possibility is that the program jumped into data and tried to execute that data which translated to the Exception D vector. Do you have any other stability problems besides Ibrowse? A bug in Ibrowse is the most likely culprit and this info should be reported to the Ibrowse developers. If you have other stability problems then you should check that your memory and accelerator card are socketed good. You should also check that you have the latest SetPatch. You could try the skip option of SmartCrash and see if it allows you to continue. It probably will crash again with a different reason though.

I had pretty much the same crush problem with Ibrowse 2.4 on my 1200 030 / 16mb ram / OS 3.9, ages ago. It crushed when I tried to log in into one specific site (!!!!), it crushed for reasons unknown to me cause there was a time that I was able to visit this site as well with no probs. On other sites I tested -not that many after all and there were all Amiga sites-, Ibrowse worked well.

Problem fixed when I deleted the Java plugin from the plugins folder. I need to re check this stuff and perhaps re install Ibrowse -had done it back then but the problem remained-, but this Amiga is temporary off line.

Strange Amiga issues....

HI folks yet another update ..

Again thanks for all the feedback (especially the debug info).

I had originally decided to do a "clean" resinstall of IB24
but after upacking the lha file I  checked out the size of the javascript.library file before I ran the installer :-

javascript.library in my (buggy) working IB24 was 216328
javascript.library.020 in the unpacked IB24 was   228484

So I then went ahead and ran install for a "clean" IB24, after I encountered the crashes and hangs I had previously experienced.

I then went back to my "buggy" IB24 and simply replaced the 216328 file with the 228484 one ....... and since then my buggy IB24 is no more! I have run for about 5 days without any hangs or crashes and I have some form of javascript processing working.

I realize that there are 68020 fpu variants of the javascript library in the unpacked IB24 but all I know is that I now have a very stable IB24.

Hi folks,

yet another update on this, I sent a copy of the Smartcrash O/P to IB support mailing list and had some feedback from Oliver and Phillipe :-
"the 68030 (41Mhz) FPU is a 68882 (9mhz)

I think there must be some issue with your 68882 then - do you have any FPU
enabled software? It's either a hardware problem or something on the
software side not detecting the FPU or making it available to the OS and
apps. I'm afraid I can't remember back to my Blizzard 1230-IV days when I had
an FPU - not sure if special libs, etc, had to be installed as with 040/060
cards whose built-in FPU does not handle all the 68881/2 instructions.

FYI, I traced the smartcrash output to an FMOVE.X instruction which is causing
the crash on your system, but I don't see any problem - there is no reason
for it to crash on a 68882 as it's a common and legal instruction.
Oliver

Maybe wrong or mising math library installed ???

Regards
--

Philippe Bovier *(Mrod)*"

So I checked my math libraries which were 37.1 /38.1, I found an update for mathtran.library on Aminet to 43.6 and replaced the original. I then switched javascripts back on in IB24 and so far (8 days) so good i.e. I have had two hang
ups in that time, both of which I have been able to skip over with Smartcrash .... watch this space

Loads of complicated remedies here, but I was having the exact same problem & a super-simple fix suggested by Rkauer solved all:

Set cache to RAM...no more crashes...NEVER! :-D

PZ.

*edit* - For people with not much free RAM: The above is for my A1200 with 64MB of fast RAM, but a good fix for the A2000 with only 8MB fast, a non-boot HDD partition dedicated to iBrowse cache also does the trick.
