AmigaOS 4 systems' price
« on: February 02, 2009, 09:20:20 PM »
Hello,

I just treated this PegII with AOS piece of news an an inspiration for this post.

I wonder what is the exact pricing for OS4 fully featured environment?
I mean systems both discontinued (like AmigaOne, PII, eventually classics) and manufactured.

Say, I am about to get myself OS4 soon, still, thinking of choices any other than Sam.  And have not the faintest idea on its alternatives... Auctions do exist but.... what's the market price?

Would you please help??
This very post might be a useful reference for future.

As an example - I can see P2 auction on my local ebay for 660 $ right now. Don't know if this is a bargain or not.
Was: Mac Mini PPC running MorphOS 2.4
Now: Amiga Forever 2010 with AmiKit and AmigaSYS
Not used: Icaros Desktop 1.2 (reason: no wifi)
Planned soon: an OS4 system
Shortly then: a MOS notebook (wifi is a must-have)

They're al yesterday's technology at tomorrow's price.  Non-collectables at collectables prices.

But that said there are two boards you can us, a gensi Pegasos II and an ACUBE SAM board.  The SAM's initial run has, I believe sold old.

Genesi

SAM

You seem to be in the Europe so your best bet is to order from Amigakit.  The price is for the motherboard, you'll still need a case, keyboard, harddrive , etc.

You'll end up spending the cost of a multi-core modern machine for a system as powerful as your iPhone, but with far less programs available

Good Luck.

persia beat me to it ;-)

I agree that amigakit.com as a good place to start.

AmigaOS 4.0 (Classic Version)
AmigaOS 4.1 for AmigaOne and MicroA1
AmigaOS 4.1 (Pegasos II)
AmigaOS 4.1 (SAM440ep)

AmigaOS 4.1 (Pegasos II) and AmigaOS 4.1 (SAM440ep) are approximately the same price.  AmigaOne version is less expensive.

Hardware wise:

SAM440ep is new hardware.

AmigaOne and MicroA1 are no longer manufactured.  Only available in the used market place.  Most of the boards are 4 years old or older.

Not sure about Pegasos II.

Good luck.

@persia

I agree with your comment about iPhone.  My son recently got an iPod touch machine and I was really amazed by what that little unit could do, including wireless internet access through our router.  It can't operate as a cell phone, but it can easily do the normal stuff I do on the internet, plus play music, photos, videos, etc.

Mental note:  Do not hire persia as spokesman for Amiga when putting new company together. ;-)

Get hardware specifications in line with system cost and you wont have to worry!   personally i think 1000+ USD for a system as powerful as a 6+ year old imac G3 is a bit absurd

If you want OS4 go get Pegasos 2. It is the fastest Amiga out there. 1GHz G4 (AltiVec), two ethernet ports AGP, 3xPCI, gameport, on board audio and as a bonus you can run MorphOS.

$660 sounds reasonable for complete system.

That might be a plus if you're a programmer, lots of potential  projects just waiting to be picked up :)

I'd find a Sam more confortable to use as a desktop machine rather than a iPhone...

I agree that the Peg2 G4 does offer a really good solution...if you can find one.  I was lucky, I bought an almost complete system (no psu) through the forums here.  It looks like it wasn't a bad price although I have lavished a new case, new hdd, new super-multi drive, new gfx card on it  :-D  Which added a fair bit to the cost.  Morphos2.2 is a nice os and I've ordered os4.1 from Amigakit who I've always found reliable.

I bought my SAM from vesalia who gave good service. I really like the SAM, it's so quiet and small (my case is only about 7cm tall). On the whole you wouldn't think it had such a "slow" cpu. The most concerning thing for me is the 64mb gfx mem (I use quite a lot of screens) so maybe the flex version is a better bet with the extra pci slots.

And where could one get a pegasos 2? Arent this as hard to get as the AmigaONE? I doubt the release of OS4.1 will make them cheaper or easier to get either.

From MorphOS users who are upgrading to Mac Mini :-P

Harder than Amiga1 if you look at AWN classifieds.
