Need Apollo Accelerator Help
« on: September 08, 2003, 05:33:06 AM »
Hi All,

I just picked up another 3000 to use as parts for my main machine. One of the major parts I was interested is an Apollo 4040/4060 card that was in the new 3000. I've been trying to get the new system up and running as is, but I'm having some issues. If I pull the Apollo, it boots fine. Put it in, and it just hangs. I'm not getting any of the normal colored screens either way, so that's no help.

Some odd things about the card and system.. The card is screened 4040/4060, but it's only got 2 simm slots like the 3000 series cards. Is it possible this was misscreened or something? Also, there is a mod done on it where the scsi chip on the motherboard is connected to the to of the fast connector. It looks like some sort of combo between the int2 fix and the necessary hack for the 4000 series Apollos in the 3000.

So I guess my questions boil down to this. Do I really have a 4000 series Apollo or is this a 3000 series? Do I need to do the scsi chip to kickstart rom mod as outlined on Amiga-Hardware.com or is the existing hack equivalent? Should I worry about the int2 mod?

Also, does anyone have a manual for this card as well as a Picasso II? PDF, text file, scans, bad photocopies, whatever is fine by me.

TIA,

Checked with TBBAH and it sais the following: "For installation in an A3000 series machine, you must have at least Kickstart 2.04. You cannot use kickstart V1.4, the pre-boot kickstart that loads the ROM from disk, regardless of the Kickstart version it eventually loads.

CPUCLK (J104) Must be set to position INT on the motherboard
BRDCLK (J102) Must be set to position INT on the motherboard
QUADCLK (J100) Must be set to 25M on the motherboard.

For installation in an A3000 series machine you will require a chip adaptor which was usually supplied with the card. The SCSI chip on the motherboard and one of the Kickstart ROMs should be removed and inserted into the adaptor, wish is then placed into the empty sockets on the motherboard."

@Brian,

Thanks. I had found that page shortly after I posted for help. Unfortunately, that didn't get me running again.. I hate trying to debug hardware that I'm not even sure works correctly!

So far, no luck. I've tried several different combinations of jumpers and scsi chips (both with and without the mod described above). Nothing has worked. I think I may try doing the 4040/4060 mod like it says on the main apollo site and see if that buys me anything..

Are there any special requirements as far as customs chips go? Maybe I'm running something that's too old?

Thanks for the advice,

Slightly OT,

Are there any kickstart remappers for the apollo 1240 card? I'd like to be able to use a 3.1 image on an 3.0 machine....
