KatManDEW: sorry to hijaak your thread  :-D  And, did you try to add an assign for SongPlayer to your user-startup? For some odd reason, that's the only way I could get it to work...
(e.g. my assign looks like this:
ASSIGN SongPlayer: Creative:Sound/SongPlayer/

Do I need to "install" SongPlayer?

IIRC it didn't need much in the way of installations, though the version from AmiNet is probably the new C version which may require more external stuff.

@All
I reckon the VBR thing isn't a CPU power thing, seeing as I can play 320kbps files on my 060. Maybe it's just not supported by that engine, be it mpega or what not. I'm sure I've been able to play VBR files myself, but maybe that was with AmigaAmp or something...

I'll give playing an MP3 on my A600 a go and see how it copes ... might help when I put in the MP3@64 ;-)

Just need a clock port cable and a nice elegant way to mount the board in the A600.

First of all, are there audio cables connected to your Amiga?  Does the Sound preference or AHI preference able to play a simple beep through your speakers?  Did your install of AmigaOS 3.9 include the installer application on your hard drive?  (Early versions of AmigaOS didn't.)
