Cold freezes.
« on: January 29, 2009, 02:29:46 PM »
Seems like my old faithful is starting to go bad somehow.

When I first turn it on I have a lot of problems with freezes. Sometimes they unfreeze after a while, sometimes they don't. One thing I notice is that miami says it can't open ariadne_ii.device unit 0 and I have to turn it off to fix that, not just reset.

Though, after about 20 minutes of this everything seems to work normally again with no freezes or similar errors. This tells me it's somehow temperature related.

Question is, is it the zorro daughter board, the ariadne or the CS Mk II. Gonna open it up and re-attach everything to see if it helps. After starting to play with my A4k again last week it hadn't been on for about a year.

Maybe there's a poor connection somewhere which improves as it expands due to heat. Try dismantling everything, cleaning all the contacts and re-assembling.

Yes, that's what I was thinking. It's the first thing to do. Considering how little I've used it the last few years it's probably a good idea. Some of the unstability I have, which I can't recall having when I used it daily 7-8 years ago, might be because of this.

Gonna take out all cards, take out all socketed chips, clean and reseat and see what happens.

Don't forget to check and test your ram, more often than not that can be the culprit. My A2000 would freeze up after 5 minutes when I tried to move from an application  back to Workbench. The funny part was if I stayed in the application I could go on for hours, only when I returned to WB. It turned out to be the memory. I replaced it and it has worked fine. :-)

I'm more or less sure it's temp related since it's rock solid after being on for half an hour... but of course it can be connected with memory as well.

Had a similar problem with an A2000 but it was caused by using the A2091 in a particular Zorro slot. Best thing to do is strip the machine to bare minimums and see if u can isolate the problem.
