Converting DPaint ILBMs
« on: January 28, 2009, 11:05:34 PM »
So I've managed, after much frowning and an attempt at installing MultiDOS that left me swapping disks literally about 80 times, to find a way, albeit convoluted, to transfer files from my Amiga to my PC (running Linux, though I have access to Windows).

However, when I tried to convert my DPaint pictures from ILBM, using a Linux ILBM to PPM converter, it garbled all of my halfbrite image palettes, outputting

Code: [Select]
matt@hayashi:~/amiga/192.168.0.1/~matt/lowres$ ilbmtoppm -isehb random\ g > rg.ppm
ilbmtoppm: warning - non-square pixels; to fix do a 'pnmscale -yscale 1.1'
ilbmtoppm: unknown chunk type DPPS - skipping
ilbmtoppm: warning - probably shifted 4-bit colormap
ilbmtoppm:     use "-adjustcolors" to scale colormap to 8 bits
ilbmtoppm: input is a 6-plane EHB ILBM

Basically, it got the main colours right, but the half-brightness colours randomly remapped to other colours, and I'm not sure why.

Anyone know how I could rectify this, or a better converter/way of loading ILBMs?

You haven't tried Gimp? I thought that it could read all amiga images? Haven't tried myself though so I'm not sure.

I do know that some old version of CorelDraw could but it's about 10 years ago I tried so I don't know if the newer versions can.

Tried this, but IrfanView keeps pagefaulting in Wine for little to no reason. I might try install it on one of the Windows computers around the house instead, though, so all hope is not yet lost.

Thanks, anyway!

Also, I just tried The GIMP, and it can't natively load ILBMs. :( Also might have a look for gfxcon tomorrow.

You could convert the files on the Amiga, then transfer them. Art Department Pro is great for this! If you don't have it - you get it for a song on eBay these days.

If you have an AGA system or emulator you could convert the EHB ILBMs to straight 64-color ILBMs with either a newer version of DPaint or Personal Paint and then try converting from there.

I had very good results using the Image Magick tools to convert it.  You may need to specify on the command line that the source image is ILBM, but other than that, it should convert to PNG (or other formats) without issue.

The only (minor) issue I had in the past was that the aspect ratio was off, due to non-square pixels on the miggy.

There's probably an ImageMagick installer package for your Linux distro.

I used XnView to convert my files way back when after digging up an old hard drive and not having an Amiga to put it in. Good tool. Available on each of the platforms.

Dear Friend:

Image f/x (amiga) should be good enough to convert the picture files to another format. You could use the free version of image f/x that came as a coverdisk on CU amiga magazine. Someone on here might have the free coverdisk and send it to you for free.
Cheers !!!

Unfortunately ImageMagick just seems to invoke the aforementioned ILBM converter, which does a grand job of killing my halfbrite. =(

I'll have to get that Amiga converter some of you mentioned up and running on the old girl... I wonder why it refuses to play fair with my halfbrite images... maybe there's something wrong with them...

Well, halfbrite is sort of an extension of the original ILBM specification, so I guess some software doesn't know about it. I take it you don't have UAE installed? Might be a good opportunity to set it up and play around with a few programs. PersonalPaint should do a good job, does a lot of what DPaint can do (though not all), and can export a lot of formats including JPEG and BMP. It's freeware now AFAIK...

the linux version of GIMP can (or did), but not the windows version.

I've looked for the loader online and I can't find it
