A4k PSU fan?

Yes, I'm lazy. I know I can open it up and have a look but I don't want to until I have to. :p

What size is the fan in the A4k PSU? It's making some really horrible noise, I guess it's completely worn out after all these years and needs to be replaced.

It's the standard 80mm size.  12VDC.

That's what I thought. Think I'll have to go out and buy me one tomorrow and get it overwith. This noise is extremely annoying! :-P

I stuck a Nexus (with the rubber mounts it comes with) in my A2K PSU, it's pretty quiet and seems to cool adequately. Some of the 80mm Pabst are also pretty quiet, but the Nexus lacks the annoying mechanical "clicking" noises of the Pabst fans.

Can't accuse the original fan of being quiet really, not even when its sounds normal. I'm pretty sure the fan I'll get is quieter. Got two of them in my webserver and I can't hear them.

Don't know how it looks inside the PSU though, if I have to solder or not.

Hope this will hold. It was a pain to take apart the PSU so I could easily reach the cables and desolder them.. didn't have any screwdriver that was long enough. So, I cheated and cut the cables and just stripped and taped instead.

I hope it won't burn up for me but it's working well and the noise is so wonderful now! ;)

Got me a zalman fan with two speeds, or actually there was an adapter with a resistor for the lower speed.. if things are starting to become to hot I can just open it up and remove that one and it will spin at 3000 instead of 1700rpm. But, I think this is good enough, I doubt the original fan spun any faster and pushed more air than this does now.

Just wonder how long the psu will be able to keep it up, it's about 16 years old now so I'm sure it will fail eventually, especially after reading about others here changing psu's.

Man, get yourself an ATX adapter and a Mini-ATX power supply.  You won't be sorry.

Or not.  When I replaced the fan in my 4000D PSU, I cut off the metal grill covering the fan and replaced it with a wire grill.  While I was at it, I bypassed the limiting resistor on the circuit board of the PSU.

As long as it works I'll leave it like this. Not using it that much, just got the urge to play around with it for a while like I do once in a while. :)
