WinUAE AmaxII and GCR disks
« on: January 15, 2009, 12:00:25 PM »
Is it possible to get GCR disks (Amax) in a .adf, usable by WinUAE?

If yes, with which tool (Transdisk is MFM only) ?

Thanks.

Danke sehr Thomas!

I don'k know if raw MFM can read GCR encoding, but I will try to see and adapt rawread program if not.
I will try to retrieve my powermonger data disk and deluxe paint II key disk.

Another question:
How to code an amax .amhd for WinUAE, if it's possible ?

 :-)

Why bother using Amax II on WinUAE when there are far better Mac emulators for the PC available?

I doubt its possible. Only 800K Mac disks used the GCR encoding and with them comes a major hurdle.
Apple used 5 different rotation speeds spread across the disk sectors resulting in different bitrates. So you can only read Apple GCR disks using a Mac drive with an adapter or using the Catweasel.

@mongo
How about Software Preservation ?
AMax is a good Macintosh plus emulator.

I use also PCTask and Windows 1.04 on WinUAE, just for fun and to show how was computers in 1985. :lol: Try to install Windows 1.04 in a VMWare => you can't.

@MastaTabs
The disks are not 800K Mac disk but Amax disk formatted.
They have 800Ko in capacity but they are not MFM disks, so they certainly are GCR.
I don't care to read true Mac disks, I only want to preserve and store my existing disks in .adf file.

Then I'd suggest to use DiskCopy inside MacOS to create .img DiskImage files of the disks.
