Using Joystick to navigate OSD on minimig
« on: January 09, 2009, 06:25:34 PM »
I was wondering why on earth one has to drag along a big PS2 keyboard with the MiniMig just to use it as a OSD navigator. It kinda ruins the gaming feeling of a small A500-in-a-box :)

Would it be possible to program the core to use the joystick in either of the ports, to navigate the OSD ?

Forgive me if this is already implemented, but I have not found any info regarding this issue yet.

Hi Palm.

In the last firm (done by Yaqube) the joystick navigate is available. You can show the OSD pressing up & down simultaneously(*) and navigate using up and down. To select any option, press fire button.
(*)In order to invoke the menu pressing up & down you will need modify your joystick.

Hope it helps.
Regards.

The feature of activating the OSD by simultaneous pressing of up and down direction keys is no longer available in the forthcoming firmware. I found it unreliable and working well only with my modified APPE32 interface and PSX/PS2 pad.

Instead I simply wired the on-board MENU button to the third fire button line on the joystick connector (this line isn't connected at all so there is no way of supporting a CD32 pad or additional buttons on a Sega Mega Drive pad).

To use the START button to bring the OSD on it's required to swap three wires inside the SMD pad.

Besides you can always use the Minimig MENU button to switch on/off the OSD menu.

The problem is a skew between both direction signals which causes false detection of the up/down button being pressed.

I've thought no one uses it. I will reintroduce this feature and make something to counteract the undesired behaviour.

BTW: Nice mod! :-D

Third Joystick button ? Could you clarify more on this matter ?

BTW Up+Down is a ok solution I think. Most joysticks can be easily modified to use either of their buttons to work as this combination.

for amiga joystick this mod is really easy, you need just three wires and two way switch. ive used "reset" switch from old pc case.
With third button it will be really problem, as none of amiga joystick dont have enough wires in cable. But there are solutions which i have in mind:
-Butchering cable from sega pad (enough wires), or
-Using sega pad directly for moddding (i dont like these, really).
-Make a completely new cable (does not look good for me)

I think I like the original up+down trick the best. I have ordered PSX64 adapters to connect PSX controllers to the Amiga, and the PIC on the PSX64 adapter lets me program macros/hotkeys (e.g. UP+DOWN combo) to either of the PSX extra buttons. This will let me use a wireless PSX controlers with the MiniMig PLUS i can have a MENU OSD button on either of the extra PSX controllers buttons. Pretty nice eh ?

(Oh, yes of course..i Bought 2 PSX64 adapteres...)

www.syntheticdesigns.com i think the page was names. He has started to sell them now (Tony Westbrook). THey are like 39  bucks each. Not that bad imho for such a nice retro gadget.
