How to use an A2000 with a cable modem?

Well, after suffering, and I do mean real suffering with a slow dialup modem, (on a good day I connect at 28800) because of our ancient phone lines up here in the boonies, we're having cable internet service put in.  Comes complete with a cable modem for the Pee Cee, but what can I do about my beloved A2000?  Can I use it too with cable internet service, or am I stuck with slow dialup service?  Any help at all from the community would be wonderful.  Best regards....Art :-?

I know that using Ethernet would work (X-Surf for example)

Wow, thanks for the fast reply Jeffimix, this x-surf is a zorro card?  Don't really know too much about ethernet either.  Could you explain more?  Thanks much! :-)

You should be able to connect a router to the cable modem and share the cable connection with the Amiga.  I don't know how to set that up on the Amiga though.

The x-surf is a z2 10 megabit network card, like the ariadne 2 and several other z2 cards which are nowadays not easy to find. (Tho the xsurf is still produced iirc).

It would help if you'd know which modem you'd get. Chances are high that you''ll get an USB cable modem. It would be nicer if it's possible to get an ethernet cable modem, it would allow the connection of a cheap router. This makes it possible to share the same internet connection with a lot of computers.

The X-Surf even has an PPPoE Driver included.
With an Ethernet Cacbelmodem you could directly connect the Amiga to the net.

but you need miami or genesis for the TCP stack, too - either has the ability for DHCP, usually required in cable setups, and both should support the x-surf.

I use a cheap router with firewall and NAT
(that requires that your Cable-Modem has Ethernet)
X-Surf2 Ethernetcard
A TCP/IP stack Genesis here (I like Miami too).
I had Problems to setup Genesis using DHCP

At the moment I use static IP adresses:

Router 192.168.2.1
PC        192.168.2.2
AMIGA 192.168.2.3

If you like to use SAMBA for Filesharing too
its much easier to setup when you have static
IP's

It's also possible without a router. Just put 2 Network-Card's in a PC (when you have one :-))
and install a proxy-server (This works also when the modem is an USB one) only 1 NIC then ofcourse

Man, I can dial up at up to 49333 bps in Australia!

Remember that the quality of the modem helps as well as a good phone line. :-) I have a particuarly good modem. :-)

I thank all of you for your help on this problem.  Lot's of great suggestions.  Maybe I can request an ethernet modem from the provider instead of usb.  I'll post a thread letting you know how it works out. Thanks again....Art :-)

Have you got any information your ISPs technical solution? It's difficult to help you if we don't get more info than just that it's a cable modem. If you don't know, you should browse their website and hunt for info.

And what about your A2000. What specs does it have?

Sorry about being a little short on info, just was not thinking.  Looking on their website is a good idea to find out about what they use, didn't think of that either, thanks for the tip.  My Amiga is an A2000 with '060/50 Blizzard with 128 meg ram, CGX card version 4, OS3.9, and using Miami demo version.  I'll check that websit right now.  Thanks again for getting back to me.  Best regards...Art

Yo, Artman, you might consider a USB controller for your A2000 - it'll open a lot of other options up to you , but most importantly you'll be able to use a USB-Network media converter, if not hook the modem directly to your 2000!
