Do Amiga Users Still Use There Classic Amiga's On The Net?
« on: December 29, 2008, 06:39:51 AM »
Hello All,

With the prices of Classic Amiga's at all sky high and how
cheap you could get a  PC or Macintosh these day's I was
wondering do classic Amiga Users still use there machines
on the net?
Also what web browsers do must Amiga Users use these days?

Please don't think I'm putting Amiga down, I have A4000T
with Cyberstorm 060 PPC and I try to surf the net the best
I can. But sadly there times I have to use my G5 Mac for
the web as the Amiga's too slow and can't get to many major
web address.

I would love to hear your opinion on this subject.

Thanks in advance,
Merv Stent

Proud Amiga User Since 1987

Hi,

I think this one's been done to death a few times! General synopsis: browsers for OS 3.9 and earlier are generally very out of date and/or slow and/or lacking in features required by many current web sites.

However, since quite a few sites provide a mobile or portable version (e.g. BBC News, etc), all is not entirely lost!

I rarely use my Amigas on the web - so much easier with the likes of Firefox.

No. I browse the net only on my A1 and, occasionally on my Linux box.

My AWeb on 3.9 is crippled, so I switched to IBrowse which has more features but is time limited because there's no way to register it.  I'd make a lot more use of my Amiga on the Net if only I could unlock the bloody browser!

I have a 040 A3000 and for occasional aminet/whdload downloads it's very very handy. But doing regular everyday surfing on the amiga is just not possible (I mean even with my 060PPC setup. ibrowse 2.4 is just not that good, OWB Classic is slow as molasses).

Yup, A1200t 030/32Mb on broadband here. Registered IBrowse/Voyager don't time out, but it's rather slow  :-D

i used to use voyager on an A4000/030 to get to my hotmail account, however those days are long gone.

i find an amiga hooked up to a broadband connection is still usefull for low overhead sites like forums, the occasional google, and the ever present aminet.
and ibrowse is good enough for basic browsing. just don't expect mainstream sites to work too well, if at all.

OWB needs ram, and lots of it. i haven't tested it on 68k yet... but apparently has quite good support of current web standards.

A500, A600, A1200x3, A2000, A3000, A4000 & a CD32.
and probably just like the rest of you, crates full of related "treasure" for the above XD

Yes, I use Ibrowse 2.3/OS3.9 on my A4000/060 :-)
I mostly use it for GMail/Google, Amiga.org, Amiga.dk, Aminet & Jabberwockey/MSN.
Of course a lot of text editing, a little gaming and so on..

I do have Mozilla Firefox 3.0.1 on my XP box... But the Amiga is just so much more fun to use :-D

AND! A big advantage, the Amiga does NOT get all the malware there are on the net. I surf without protection, with my Amiga.
On the PC some kind of virus/malware protection is absolutely necessary!
A1200, Blizzard 030, 2+32MB ram, 4GB CF, pcmcia netcard, Kickstart 3,1
A600, 2MB chip ram+4Mb pcmcia S-RAM, Kickstart 3,1
CD32 - Just for fun  :-D

Hi,

On Broadband:

I use my A4000/Cyberstorm MKII/SCSI/Mediator/Voodoo as my main WWW machine.

I also have an A1200/Blizzard/060 for Browsing,Chat and E-Mail as well as an A1200/Jaws MKII/50 with 8 meg Fast RAM for Chat and E-Mail using either cable or WiFi connection with both systems to my router.

Dial-up:

Finally I have an A4000/Apollo/4040/PIV as well as a CD32/SX1/ 8 Meg Fast RAM for when my Broadband provider goes down.

Most sites I browse are displayed OK, some may not appear right but that doesn't bother me, I use Googlemail OK.

Broadband systems are "quiet" fast :)

I dont need a PC, I do have an old Power Mac which some friends gave me, but I only use that to view RAF Regiment YouTube vids which may interest me.

BTW, is somebody working on porting NetSurf to AmigaOS3.x?

I think using GCC >= 3.x will save some time :-)

Use aweb/ibrowse from classic ao4. This is not primary computer, but I never switch to PC only for web - if I play with my amiga, i use it browsers.

I regularly use AWeb (for Amiga related sites, though it's a pain sometimes - I guess more like a "because it CAN be done" attitude though I judge content higher than eye candy), YAM and Jabberwocky.

I no longer have a classic that's really up to browsing. OWB on os4.1 is what I use most. Otherwise I use Firefox on xp/vista/linux depending where I am. My old A1200 does sometimes go online but only for Aminet via ftp.
