Another HD8+ Thread :\
« on: December 23, 2008, 12:26:14 PM »
Hi, Ive had a GVP A500-HD8+ for a while now, the first time I tested it my A500 would display a dark grey screen when it was connected, whether it was on or off. I bought a new hard drive, and upgraded the ROM from 4.13 to 4.15 and had no change. So finally I cleaned the contact pins on the A500's expansion port. Now booting the Amiga with it turned off causes it to display a black screen, and when it's on it displays the 'please isert' WorkBench disk screen, whether it's set to Autboot or not. I've tried it with and without RAM with the correct jumper configurations and with both hard drives, one which I'm sure has WB 1.3 installed and it's the same with both. Can some one please tell me there's some silly little thing I've missed? :-D

Could the SCSI ID of the new hard drive and the SCSI ID of the host controller be the same?

I have 2 of these controllers.. Just bought my second one for $40.00us on Ebay. They are a great device..

Heres what you do:

1.) Make sure the hardisk is set to ID 0 and termianted properly.

2.)Run the FaaastPrep program from the GVP install disk.

3.)Select "Manual"

4.)If it's talking to the drive, it should now show the configuration settings for the drive... Make sure it's set to "BOOT". Also, make sure the BootPri: is set to some reasonable value (like 1). If not, change it so that it is, and select "write".. This will write the config back to the RDB of the drive..

If you need the Install Disk, I can send you a .dms of it.
Also, I have the manual. If you cant find it on the web, I could scan it and upload it somewhere..

5.)Reboot and try again.

@Metalguy66

Thanks for the info, it'll probably take my a while to do all that so it'll have to wait 'till tomorow. I've got a copy of the install disk, thanks for offering :-D

Well I've had a minor break through. I probably should have mentioned I haven't been able to get the HD light to turn on, whoops :roll: but today I removed the SCSI ribbon cable and switched it around, and now it lights up! but unfortunately it hasn't fixed the problem, as now the Amiga grey screens whenever the hard drive's attached. I don't know what else to try :-?

i do not know about your other problems, but Kickstart 1.3 was NEVER Autoboot.

It was not until the Kickstart 2.04+ that the file system was moved from disk, to ROM.

 The HD+8 have its own ROM to boot from... as all other devices of that era. :roll:
