2GB filesize limit and classic Amigas
« on: December 15, 2008, 07:49:12 PM »
  Hi.
 Just a short question:
 Afaik, the only way to overcome the file size limit on a PPC equipped, classic Amiga is to use OS4. Is this right or wrong?
 I think that i'm going to need this feature since it is absolutely essential(??) to burn DVD movies.

You won't have any problem if you don't burn from an image but from a file structure as the VOBs are limited to 1 GB.

@Zac67
 VOBs are limited to 1GB? Cool! I thought that they were much larger than this. Ok then.

Edit: If i burn the DVD using file structure, will it be readable from a stand-alone DVD player?

@AmigaMance

I *think* SFS 2.x will allow to break that file size barrier too... check strohmayer.org for more info.

Cheers

 I can't find version 2 on the website, i think it was removed because it didn't work properly or something, i'm not sure if i remember correctly. I do have it somewhere in my archives, anyhow..

 In any case, even if the file system (SFS) and the device driver (scsi.device) supports the handling of files bigger than 2GB, it's the dos.library that will prohibit this!
 Afaik, the dos.library of AOS 3.x and MOS 1.4.5 can't handle >2GB files!
 Could someone inform us for sure if i am correct or not?

@NovaCoder
 8GB CF? I think you are talking about the PARTITION size barrier of 4GB. This is something different... Sorry if i missinterpreted you.

Just take a look at any Video DVD - the videos are all split in 1 GB hunks.

Dunno about burning on Amiga, but usually you need to select 'Video DVD' as target since there's a bit more to it than just the file structure.
Actually most DVD players I've tried don't take it so critically though.  ;-)
(Single layer that is - dual layer requires some special handling of the layer break.)

AFAIK you need:

1. An Operating System with 64-bit DOS support
2. A file system that's capable of doing this (which is still quite rare, but something like EXT2, smbfs, NTFS(?) should work)
3. Applications that *can actually handle* files of this size (have to use the new DOS API).

MorphOS is Amiga done right! :)

 That means OS4 then, as far as I can tell. Because from the OSes i can use on my Amiga, only this one has 64-bit DOS support and (iirc) there are a few "64-bit DOS aware" applications like AmiDVD. Thanks for your feedback.
 Anyone can correct me if i am wrong.

Indeed, the MorphOS for Amiga (version 1.4.5) does not support this, neither does AmigaOS 3. MorphOS 2 does support this, but isn't available for Amiga/PowerUP, and I doubt it will ever be (but who knows). So I guess OS4 will be your only option.

Well, the question was what options there are, and none of the *free* OS's for his Amiga supports this. MorphOS *does* support it, only not the version available for his Amiga, so... :-)
