Hello from New/Old Amiga User!
« on: December 08, 2008, 08:47:09 PM »
Hi,

I've been lurking here for awhile but have never formally intoduced myself... Hi, I'm Tim.

I haven't touched my Amiga 500 since the early 1990's but have jumped back in the ring last summer when I picked up a 4000d at a garage sale... and then the addiction started again.

Since then I've managed to pick up another 4000d, 1200hd, 2000 and a bunch of 500's... alot of the stuff was going to be pitched.

I've finally put my dream 4000d together (took me 6 months).  Its not a lot by the standards of a bunch of machines on here but I'm proud that I finally have a machine that I could only dream of back in the day.  It has a WarpEngine040 w/128m, Picasso IV, XSurf, CF Card, IDE-SCSI adapter w/ DVDrw, 18g SCSI HD, 19" crt,Custom cables, etc.  Oh, and cleaned it meticulously!  I'd like to post pictures of it on here.

Thanks again for all of the help and info guys! :-D

Hello and welcome.

I, like you, was absent for a number of years.

My interest was rekindled with the Emulator scene and then with the purchase of a 4000D of EBAY FCUK!!!!

I was sold a bit of a duff that I've now eventually got working correctly.

Battery had leaked and the sound was knackered. Both now sorted out by myself after learning a few tricks on the different Amiga user sites.

Just a work of caution - check out that battery on a regular basis if you've got the original type of battery fitted. They can and do leak and bugger up your motherboard.

Yeah, the first thing I did after discovering that the battery had not yet leaked was to get that thing off-of-there and I installed a nice coin-cell batteryholder.  It worked out nicely ...... had to put a diode on it so it won't charge but it still should years and years before I have to replace it.

Tim,

Don't forget that the same goes for your 2000 and any 500+ if you have any.

That I discovered today..... :-(

The 2000 was just part of a bulk deal (it was the A1200 that I was after).  I pulled it apart and besides missing the power supply the mb under the battery don't look too good.  Hopefully she still boots up but I gotta get a replacement ps or convert a pc one which I hear is not too difficult but not exactly easy either.

Thanks again for the feedback, it is nice to know that someone is listening. Nobody outside in the 'real' world gives a 'bleep' about the Amiga anymore. :-P

You're right about the outside world - you just need to find the right people out there. There are a few around that still offer repairs - although I found it more fun finding the information on the different Amiga sites and carry out the repairs myself
