Good old Amiga <-> Win98 via Samba question...
« on: September 02, 2003, 11:29:27 PM »
I've got the machines to ping and the amiga to Fileshare with Win98 via SMBFS... So why can't my PC share with the amiga :-?

I've read the Amiga -> Windows Samba network guide from amigasamba.org but it won't work...
(pretty sure I haven't missed anything :)

"lmhosts" file is missing in Samba:lib/ from the orig. distribution...

Should I start nmbd or smbd to get Windorks to talk to me :-?

Cheers...

LP

You start smbd as a inetd and run nmbd the same or using "Run >NIL: nmbd" when you go online. Smbd is the samba demon, nmbd is for the netbios name service. You need both of them running. The guide tells you in great detail how to do it.

Make your own LMHOSTS file, and put it in Samba:lib/

The file format is a list of:

For example, mine is:

192.168.2.10 Amiga
192.168.2.12 Win98_PC
192.168.2.14 XP_PC
192.168.2.16 Pegasos

Did you set up your amiga shares run on a user/password basis?
If so, Win98(and above) sends encrypted passwords, rather than the plain ones Win95 used.
I dunno about the newer Samba binaries that Olaf has just done, but the older ones only worked with plain passwords, so you needed to tweak the registry to get it to work.
Have a look at AmigaSamba.org for more details.

DOH! just saw in your original post that you`ve visited that site..I must pay more attention !
BTW. can your amiga see its own shares ?
On schedule, and suing

Found out the guest account in smb.conf was sat wrong... seems to work fine now!

Sorry for my late answer back, but I've been offline for a while...
