Old software compatibility on new system
« on: November 20, 2008, 10:08:32 PM »
This is an honest question, not a sarcastic one:  Is it too much to ask to be able to use old Amiga software (on floppy or CD) on a new next-gen Amiga-compatible system and have it run successfully?  On a similar note, it would be nice to be able to buy a new and complete Amiga-compatible system that's fully operational, without having to do any hardware tinkering or time-consuming software installs.  In other words, is there any new system set-up that allows one to retire their old classic Amiga, or is software compatibility going to be a serious problem?   Thanks, -Dave

Nope.  A1 or SAM run some of software but not all.

WinUAE and any run of the mill pc is the only option that suits those requirements.

Spend an additional $100 and you can get a catweasel and make use of your library of old floppies.

@orb

There is some other "replacements" on the way. One is " Clone-A", there are some threads here about this one and the other one " NatAmi ", you can check it out here "http://www.natami.net/".

Is there any way to use UAE within AROS without the catweasel hardware on a PC (or some other configuration) to read original Amiga floppies?  If not, is there some AROS/PC implementation with catweasel that is possible?  If so that would seem like a nice option, since it might allow compatibility of old software with a "new" (developing and not stagnant) Amiga-compatible OS -- for those of us that still want to remain loyal to Amiga ;-)  I do, I do.  I'm really tired of my generic Windows XP Dell PC.  Any thoughts are appreciated, as always.  Thanks, -Dave

Yeah but not all disks are read properly by catweasel (some disks read fine on Amiga).  you may want to get A2000 or 500 to archive the disks.  I know b/c i archived 300 disks. :-D
