A-OS 4 and Roadshow default config?
« on: November 12, 2008, 08:11:36 AM »
OK - I *finally* got my AmigaOne rolling (too much work, job searching and other silly side projects got in the way between when I obtained the computer and finally got it set up tonight).....Anyway, what's weird is that I can only seem to get online if I create a New Connection every time - yet I'm pretty sure that's NOT required for a conventional ethernet connection - what's more, it never seems to actually *save* the connection I created before from reboot to reboot?

I have Miami on the machine too and can flip back to that most likely, but I'd prefer to use the new stuff if at all possible.  I haven't upgraded the machine to 4.1 yet - is that the way to go, are there new config GUIs for Roadshow there, or?

I'm just thinking it should be pretty simple, yet there seems to only be one cryptic config text file in there otherwise?

sign me ignorant but a quick learner?  :)

This is very odd. What is in your "Devs:Networks/" directory?

Does your startup-sequence have an AddNetInterface call?

i'll look on the former - the latter I had to comment out to get the thing to finally go into WB on its own - otherwise it just 'sat there' with a black screen.  Could it be an issue with its ability (or inability) to access the router it's attached to or something?

Yeah, you won't get any net access without the addnetinterface call.

Are you using DHCP? DHCP does work in roadshow for most people, but it seems that a couple of routers cause it problems. Dunno why.

You could try assigning your AmigaOne a static IP outside of your routers DHCP range.

good test case.  I'll try that and post back my results, and compare with Miami too for add'l data.  I tend to use D-Link routers but we'll see...

ok - got it to work.  I think it was a combination of:

1) extra redundant 'devices' in Devs/Netinterfaces (which were really all the same network card;

2) I uncommented the line in startup-sequence and commented out the section with the wildcard in it - I specified the 'eth3com' device directly (>45~with the QUIET switch of course)

will further test/post if there are problems with different routers but doubt that will be the case.  So I'm now posting this with the AmigaOne - hooray :)

@amigau

If you are still having trouble, here are some settings that work for me for DHCP...

Startup-Sequence ... change AddInterface command to

Run >NIL: C:AddNetInterface QUIET DEVS:NetInterfaces/~(#?.info)

Contents of my Devs:NetInterfaces/ethernet file

# DEVS:NetInterfaces/ethernet
# File generated by Internet 53.1 (4.7.2008)
# On Monday, 22-Sep-08 at 19:50:25
device=eth3com.device
hardwaretype=Ethernet
configure=dhcp
id=minuet
mtu=0

My hostname is minuet. Use whatever you want.  Not sure what happens if you leave it blank.  The rest is default if you click Try dynamic configuration (DHCP) in the Internet prefs tool.

I have used DHCP for years.  This is my file for OS4.1 using same options as before.

yeah - I use DHCP on most of the little internal routers I have.  I upgraded the computer to OS 4.1 tonight and while it still didn't like that wildcard setting in the Startup-sequence (hardcoding it to 'c:addnetinterface eth3com QUIET' fixes it though) it's working great otherwise.

I got OWB to work also, even though it's a bit on the slow side compared to IBrowse - but the former DEFINITELY doesn't support CSS, most obviously on Yahoo mail....

it's SO GOOD to be using an Amiga again!  I've been using FreeBSD for some time on Thinkpads, which is ok (and definitely better than WinBLOWs) but it's not the 'fun' computer - the Amiga.

onward and upward :)
