A4000 / 060 + PPC Vs. SAMiga (440). Which one and why?
« on: November 12, 2008, 06:26:04 AM »
This is bound to get some interesting responses. I'm torn between souping up my non-commodore a4000 tower and selling the lot for a 440. I love the hardware, but if OS4.1 is everything I hope it will be, i have a feeling that it may be time to move with the times.

I have an A4000 in an Elbox Power Tower, with Repulse soundcard, FastATA, Mediator 4000, Voodoo 3, TV card, Cyberstorm 060/PPC, running OS4.0.

I also have an AmigaOne XE/G4 running OS4.1.

The AmigaOne is used every single day, the A4000 is switched on only occasionally. The AmigaOne is just way faster, and nicer to use.

I probably should sell the 4000, but it has too much sentimental value... and I still like it, its just not as nice to use as the A1.

So, basically, I say go for the SAM.

I'm leaning that way at the moment. I guess i could keep both to satisfy my nostalgia. How compatible is os 4.1 with older software I wonder.

Post which software you use..

In general, if its system friendly, it generally works.

What if it were ancient 1.3 software :)

I thought that given the hardware was so different that compatibility with the ancients would go out the window.

Well, some things written for 1.3 would work, but really, the older the software, the more likely it is to try and use the original hardware directly (and fail).

Although there are CIA and Blitter emulators for OS4.x which make some of that software work better, but not much :)

Bought one of those, yet to set it up though. This SAMiga stuff has me excited. :)

Absolutely! Finding the time to tinker with it has been a challenge of late though.

If you want to spend most of your time playing old hardware-banging games, then a souped-up A4000 would be a good idea. If, on the other hand, you're planning to spend most of your time using a modern Amiga, then the SAM 440ep would leave your souped-up A4000 in the dust in terms of capabilities.

I'll be doing the same thing soon. I'll be selling my loaded desktop A4000D to work towards running OS 4.1.

Hopefully, we don't all do that at the same time.

Not to me an *ss, but doesn't anyone think that the Sam will follow all the other "new" systems that came before? EG: BE, Amigaone etc,? Its great now, but don't you think in a year or so it will be just another passing fad?

EDIT* I am not trying to troll her, I am just asking a question, that I am wondering about. All of the above mention systems may be great, but very few people actually have them. Can the SAM hold the test of time?

I have Amiga stuff for sale at http://amigalounge.com. You can follow my builds there also.

@quarkx

Well... it never going to take Apple's market share, but thats not the end of the world.

I've had my AmigaOne for 5 years now, and it has had heavy daily use ever since (well, ok, ever since it got OS4 on it anyway), its obscurity hasn't made any difference to me.

Don't PC motherboards last on the market for only a year or so as well? So long as there is a (more powerful) successor to the SAM 440 board avaliable when/if the SAM 440 is discontinued, it's all good.

Why don't you buy one and find out first-hand. ;-)

Seriously, it makes no sense for people to hold off buying because they're worried that they might not be available a year from now. If you want one, get one now; you won't regret it. If they do go off the market and there's no new motherboard to take its place, well, you still have your SAM 440 to run Amiga OS 4.x on.
