ImageFX CD not recognized with AForever '08
« on: November 11, 2008, 05:39:43 AM »
Hi guys. Just got my copy of Amiga Forever '08 installed on the office 'media center' PC in order so that I have the means of using DPaint, PersonalPaint, and ImageFX. However, while in AF, the ImageFX CD is not recognized in CacheCDFS. I tried putting CD0 in DEVS/DOSDRIVERS, but that didn't help. I'm using the basic setup provided with the install. I didn't see this issue on the Cloantro troubleshooting page. Thanks all.

Check with a texteditor if CD0 has the correct device and unit number (uaescsi.device unit 0). If that's the case you can try to start the CDFS prefs program, and see if CD0 is present and click save or use.

Edit:
See here for a possible explanation. This problem occurred in af2005 though and occurred when using more than 1 CD drive.

Quote
Certain combinations of more than one CD-ROM drive (e.g. CD0 on the SCSI bus and CD1 on the IDE bus) are not detected automatically in the default configuration. This may be solved by selecting the drive in the CacheCDFS Preferences, which appears to trigger something which makes the drive be seen. It may be necessary to move CD0 and/or CD1 from Storage/DOSDrivers to Devs/DOSDrivers first.

I had a problem with the ImageFX 4.5 CD on my Amiga that turned out to be due to the CD being in Joliet format.  I had to upgrade my AsimCDFS to a version that handled that format.

If other CDs are OK, there may be a CacheCDFS setting to tweak to recognize the Joliet format.  Worth a check perhaps!

I've got ImageFX 4.5 installed under Amiga Forever 08.  I am using a custom virtual 68040 A4000 Amiga setup partition with OS3.9.

I vaguely seem to recall that I had initial problems getting UAE to work the the ImageFX install disk.  I know the ImageFX install CD has some sort of copy protection on it (I made a backup of my original disk once, just by dumping all the files onto my hard drive from the CD, then burning them to a new CD - it didn't work.  I had to make a byte for byte copy of the original disk - clone disk - to have a functioning backup install CD).

This might be part of the problem.  If UAE is just mounting anything in the PC's CD-ROM drive as a generic removable media (which UAE can do), then the Amiga won't be able to access whatever copy protection bits there are on the install CD.  It won't 'know' it is a CD-ROM that's being accessed.  I vaguely recall that I had to ensure that UAE was using the Amiga's own CD0: device to mount the CD-ROM drive.

Odd. All I had to do, was drag the CD icon from the Windows window onto the AF Amiga screen, and the ImageFX icon popped right up. Installation was a snap.
