Best current WinXP game?
« on: November 07, 2008, 08:19:26 PM »
I'm looking for suggestions on the best current single player game for WinXP. I just built a beefy system and want to be able to push it hard.

Suggestions? Alone in the Dark? Fallout 3?

A few I've played recently on the same gfx card (albeit under Vista/DX10) and enjoyed

RPG:
Fallout 3
Mass Effect

FPS:
Crysis / Crysis Warhead (engine now supports high res DX9 and so works fine on XP)
Call Of Duty 4
Orange Box (HL2, HL2 episodes 1&2, Portal and Team Fortress)
Unreal Tournament 3

RTS:
C&C3 Tiberium Wars / Kane's Wrath - though neither need anything like the horsepower

Umm.. Wow, I just watched the trailer and that game does indeed look jaw dropping. I may have to grab that.

Crysis is a nice resource hog...

Call of Duty 4 is a great game...

Rise of Nations or Age of Empires 3 is cool...

Fallout 3 should be great....

@Red

You really should try Crysis if you want a real hardware-pushing (or even punishing) game. You really won't see anything quite like it for a while now as Crytek released it at a time when no hardware could do it justice and made a loss. Now all the games producers are seemingly settling for the safe-bet hardware at the moment.

Your GTX260 will allow you to play it with all details set to very high (it certainly does on mine). It really is visually spectacular.

Crysis is excellent. Unreal Tournament (any #) is great.
It won't push a "new" system, but I still like Quake 4.

What genre do you like?  Sci-Fi FPS wise I've gotta give it to the Half Life series (picking up with HL2, of course) and as a side-venture, Portal.

Steam makes HL2 undesirable for anyone :-(

Steam can be a PITA but it's worth it given the quality of the HL2 universe.

You do tend to find a lot of good deals on there too.

I'll throw another vote out there for Half Life 2. I got the orange box a few months ago and have been hooked on it, the singleplayer game is fantastic. While it won't push your hardware to it's limits, it's still a great game!

Dead Space is indeed Jaw dropping, and looks better on a monitor I think basically because you sit closer.  I played in in XP and it looks great, but, unfortunately, it has some minor problems with VSync, causing the mouse to go crazy on a lot of PC's.  Fallout 3 is nice, if you like browns and greys.  It's basically Oblivion with Guns, really.  :-) Mass Effect will tax your system a lot, and will look good doing it.  Either of the Crysis games will attempt to bring your computer to tears and beat it with it's own keboard cord.  From what I understand, they aren't coded the best.  I've only played warhead in Vista, and it ran kinda like a pig.  However, I don't have the greatest system known to man.  My Vista score is only a 5.6.  Basically any of the newest games that are out that strike your fancy, check a review to make sure you don't get something you will hate, pick up a copy and play to your hearts content.
