To all "triple-booters": Which OS do you prefer the most?
« on: November 03, 2008, 08:20:53 AM »
Hi.
Since some time now, Amiga 1200/3000/4000 users with the right hardware combination have the opportunity to run AmigaOS 3.x, AOS 4 and MorphOS 1.4.5 on their machines.
To all those guys: (I suppose they are not many) I would like to know which of these 3 OSes do you fire-up most of the time and why.  :-)

Amiga OS3.x with powerup (or is that WarpOS?) because the other two suck for classic compatibility. I don't know why I even have a MorphOS partition anymore.

with more software being OS4 only, i may give it a try at some point...

A500, A600, A1200x3, A2000, A3000, A4000 & a CD32.
and probably just like the rest of you, crates full of related "treasure" for the above XD

But of that software, what do you really want to run? What are the OS4.x must have applications?

I suppose that by "classic compatibility" you mean OCS/AGA native stuff, (see legacy games, WHDLoad etc.) because MorphOS has good 68k emulation and most 68k progs will continue to work under MOS at a greater than 68040 speed, (even faster on PPC 604s) as long as they are coded in a OS-friendly manner.

I don't have ppc but I have an A4000 68060 and CV64-3d with scan doubler.  I used to have OS 3.9 but have just gone back to 3.1 with minimal eye candy and just love the quick boot and general speed and compatibility.

Yes I mean OCS/AGA native stuff. Games & demos, the stuff which (IMHO) the Amiga is all about. Take away that and all you have is a damn slow Linux-esque computer with an Amiga keyboard.

3.9 boot speed is fine if you have the latest 3.9 EPROM or a flash device (Algor, Kickflash, eFlash, Deneb etc) so you do not need to reboot during POR.

Well I'm not a triple booter... But I've owned ever Amiga model ever made.
I want a machine that can run my classic software fast.

I purchased a PowerUp board. I never in a million years thought it would take as long as it has to get a PPC AmigaOS. Sold all my Big box stuff by 2006.

I don't find any reason to upgrade to OS4 hardware. I'm actually more excited about Natami or the Clone A or even minimig. The only thing going for the Amiga is the soft spot for old software and games.

I don't have the time or desire to tinker with overpriced PPC hardware.
If the pricing was reasonable I would investigate, but even classic hardware sells for lots of cash. The remaining developers seeing this charge as much as the market can bear for any new hardware.

I don't blame them.

If all that's available is a slow PPC motherboard then at least price it accordingly and match the price of the slow non turbo carded A1200 in 1992 say for $400, $500 max adjusted for inflation I guess.
