PSP UAE - 'idiots guide'?
« on: October 30, 2008, 01:15:24 PM »
Hi!,
I'm buying a PSP for my 11 year old son and wanted to run an AMIGA emulator on it?

I have been on many sites, but haven't found an idiot proof guide to setting it up.

He loves a lot of the Amiga games, having played them on my A1200 and on PC via WINUAE, and I wouldn't mind seeing what they are like on the PSP as well ;-)

Any advice?

You'll need to install a Custom Firmware on the PSP to be able to run custom software (like PSPUAE).

The newer PSP-3000 models although they have a better screen, are currently not hackable. Try locating a PSP-2000x model as both 3k and 2k should be in the market right now.

The way to install a custom firmware is a whole chapter on it's own. Nothing hard, but can take a while. Easier if you have a friend with an already hacked psp.

Anyway is the only way

like MrZammler said, custom firmware. One of the best is DarkAlex's M33:

However as mentioned it can be a bit overwhelming at first search around on the net for walk through's about applying custom firmwares.

It's going to be an 'Argos' jobby for Christmas...so I guess it will be the newer version???

I 'll just have to wait until it's 'hackable'?

What are your thoughts on the GP2X Wiz as an alternative?

Also, UAE on the PSP is not the fastest, meaning emulation is pretty slow when there is a lot going on.  If you turn sound off it runs much smoother, but that's no fun!

Only game that runs well on the PSP is Another World, and that is because there is no background music.

And yes, installing the customer firmware on a PSP-2000, you will have to split open the battery to do this and install a jumper on some small traces.  It's not for everyone.
