How to register and config NTL cable modem for Amiga ?
« on: August 29, 2003, 11:44:01 AM »
Hi Guys and Gals,

Anybody using a NTL cable modem on thier Amiga ?
I would appreciate any advice in setting one up,
I will be using the Eternet port on the modem, will I
have to register it using a PC, or can I go online
directly ??

Thanks Wol.

if you want to go on-line directly.. prolly to easyist option.... 'cept you need something to provide an ethernet port for your miggy. A1200/600 a PCMCIA card will do, anything else 'cept A500/CD32 will be able to use a zorro card or pci card.
if you can set up a dial up account, then a cable modem should be even easier. the IP settings should come with the NTL pack. if not, give support a ring and tell them you are configuring a PC manually. don't mention amiga or they'll say that you can't connect to the net with an amiga...

A500, A600, A1200x3, A2000, A3000, A4000 & a CD32.
and probably just like the rest of you, crates full of related "treasure" for the above XD

Well I use a Telewest cable modem with my miggy. All I had to do when they came round to set it up is give them the MAC address of the network card and then set MiamiDx to get all the settings via DHCP.

Note you cannot at present use Genesis or the normal Miami as they do not support DHCP.

Yes it is a dodgy picture, but what do you expect from a mobile phone camera!!

Oh yeah and I own an A1200T/060 with Mediator etc and an A1G3SE

1. Get your modem configured with your amiga so you are getting a tempory ip adress (if you have never registered before, your ip is locked onto something that ends with anything higher than 248.

ie. 81.xxx.xxx.252 is tempory NTL ip.

2. Open web browser.

3. Type in adress bar 62.253.162.131 - This is NTL's reg page, follow through here and you will not even need to call tech support. Remember, cable modems can only go on this page when they have a tempory ip adress,, ie the MAC isnt registered with us. You register the modem with you, not the computer. Then you should be ok to go! Any questions, just ask :-)

Run Miami Init and let it do the config for you.
Then Run Miami and import from miami Init.
Then like Kev said reg your Modem MAC at the reg site. You'll need your account number etc handy.
However, The OS3.9  / Full latest Aweb was the only Amiga browser that **worked** with the ntl regsite. IBrowse 2.3 might 2.2 didnt
You might be better off using a PC to set up the account. Then copy your details accross.

Dont ring the helpline there too busy posting on amiga.org ;-)

-edit-

If the modem has been plugged into another computer before you plug it into your amiga, you will need to power down the modem for 30 seconds (not standyby unplug) before you plug it into your amiga. Designed to only work with only 1 ethernet card MAC address.

I use Ntl and just the standard Miami 3.2b.

I used miami init and loaded the setting into Miami.
My mac address was sorted by the engineer installer.
I now use a router to act as the firewall as miami does not have it like the deluxe version.

'Standard' Miami does support DHCP.  The big difference between Miami and Miami Deluxe as far as the user is concerned is support for multiple interfaces and routing.
