OS3.5 > 3.9 - Worth it?
« on: August 28, 2003, 05:19:29 AM »
I've been running OS3.5 for some time now, along with DOpus 5.82 and numerous other patches and random things.  I've been wondering about OS3.9 and I had a browse through the feature list at Amiga.com.

And my question is:

Is it worth it for me to get OS3.9?  Or am I (as I suspect) better off sticking with OS3.5 and relying on third party stuff to get the additional features?

FFS - I use SFS anyway, and my 4xEIDE adds additional support stuff.

CD Filesystem stuff - I already use AllegroCDFS

Internet - Already use IBrowse and Miami

Filetypes, AmiDock, etc - DOpus 5.82 provides similar features, already use XAD

Shell - Already use VNC

Reaction - Is it any better than with OS3.5?  Not much else other than the prefs seem to use it anyway.

AMP/Action - Now these would be nice, but it seems I would be better off just getting MooVid.

PPC Support - I have no intention of moving to PPC, though if I did there seem to be other options available anyway.

Is there anything I haven't thought of?  Any major upgrades or bugfixes that OS3.9 provides that I can't get elsewhere?

Perusing the various FAQs I also get the impression that OS3.9 might just cause more problems for me than it would fix.

I hope I don't sound all "OS3.9 sux!", I firmly believe that it's the greatest OS ever.  I just think it might not be appropriate for me, considering what I already have.

Any advice / feedback / comments / suggestions / condemnation would be most welcome.

And because someone is guaranteed to bring it up, OS4 is not an option.  I'm a 68k fan and am perfectly happy to remain so (though an 060 sure would be nice).

I've never used 3.9, and don't know about the exact differences, but to me it's not realy worth the upgrade. Especialy since I'll just be upgrading to a much newer OS soon anyway.

See!  I knew I someone would bring it up!  First reply too.

Anyway I admire all you guys who've forked out for the hardware and are forced to display endless patience waiting for OS4.  I hope it turns out to be brilliant for you.

Well I bought OS3.5 and OS3.9.
annoying things in 3.5 : time limited tcp/ip stack (miami), Aweb SE so I registered both
annoying things in 3.9 : movie player not supporting current file format
Of course there are much more but these were what I was expecting.
Is it worth ? maybe not if you already have a fully functionnal TCP/IP, web browser and movie player.

Well, the Arexx port for workbench was extended for 3.9. If you are a bit of Arexx nut (like me) you might find the extras useful. I honestly can't remember the changes from the top of my head. There was Amidock which is one of the nicest docks around and a lot easier to manage than some others. AHI is installed for you aswell. One of the boing bags installed ASyncWB which lets workbench multitask. This is a very welcome feature as you are no longer locked when deleting files and stuff. As for stability, I never noticed my system being more/less stable than when I had 3.5 installed

I just remember that I never found a good reason for buying it, so I frankly doubt that it's worth the money. Not that I can say that I found much use for my 3.1->3.5 upgrade either...

I'm not waiting for OS4.0 anymore, but when/if it shows up I'll might give it a try though...

Where was I? Yeah, right... Uhm, not worth buying (3.9) is my humble opinion  :-)
