C=64 Pro64/MSSIAH
« on: October 06, 2008, 04:49:21 PM »
Not quite Amiga, but...

MSSIAH should be out reasonably soon now. Anyone ordered?

I still can't decide whether to buy or not. I think it is really cool, wringing that use out of the C=64 with some clever engineering, and the sounds can be pretty decent with the right mods. I also think the price is reasonable, for the work effort and likely returns it will yield. Still the money could probably go a bit further into some other music gear.

As a side note, I remember some time ago when members here were buying Pro64's; so who has some music to share? What have your experiences been like, composing on the C=64? Do you think a functioning MIDI interface will be a big improvement?

Oli

@ Oliver

Thanks for the info.  I was not aware of the MSSIAH, but it looks good.

This makes getting a prophet64 even more attractive, as currently I am using the QuaddraSID VST for my SID tunes, but ideally I want to use a real C64.

I'm on the pre-order list! I'm looking forward to getting it. I have the orginal Prophet64 cartridge but it wasnt a lot of use to me without MIDI function.

Its for sale if anyone is interested?

Hi impactor,

Sorry, I should have included a link. I haven't been on A.org much recently, but I thought a few people here were monitoring this one already.

The MSSIAH can be used with a twin sid setup, and will have MIDI interface standard (i think?).

There are quite a number of people doing mods now. I like this page for an expo. People add mini playstation LCD screens as well.

I think it also shouldn't be too difficult to hack together an extension of the MIDI interface to control the custom mods.

I have an MB-6582 in the making, so am pretty well covered for SID sounds as well. I still like the Pro64/MSSIAH concept. I generally like raw electronic sounds, so it has some appeal on that front. Still, the money could definitely be used elsewhere.

Oli

-edit: OK, at least some people here were monitoring it. The pre-sales have closed, but I expect there will still be some available. There have also been previous threads on this topic, from around the time MSSIAH was anounced.
Good good study, day day up!

@spihunter

Yeah, MIDI IN with this one - seems to be crucial to make it play nice with others. A couple things ? They don't give any examples (mp3) downloads or I could not find it.

I wonder if it comes with some demo tunes?

How did yours sound?

I've got a Prophet64 already, but don't use it much as I find it a bit awkward to use. I was thinking of getting a MSSIAH as it would mean I could use a keyboard with it, or sync it to my Mac, but to be honest, I find it easier just to use a synth in Reason. And you can get some nice SID-like sounds using the Subtractor.

I still think the Prophet64 and MSSIAH are extremely cool. They're just not something I would use very often since for me, the integrated nature of Reason makes everything so easy. I can't take a C64 on a train if I want to work on a track!

Having said all that, a MSSIAH would probably make a cool toy. So I might still get one. I'm confused! :crazy: :lol:

The solution is easy: Sell the Prophet64 and get 1 or 2 MSSIAH in return. Just look at this.  :-o  :lol:

Quite a good investment I'd say...

EDIT: Another one.

Hey! I was confused first!

On a not very related note, I was looking up a few details on the energyXT sequencer which I own and potentially use, when i found someone using an Atari algorithmic composer called Tunesmith on an emulator, with MIDI loopback to soft synths. Does anyone know this prog? Early version was on C=64. I might have a play with it some time. I've always been curious about this sort of thing. Apparently Jan Hammer used to use it a bit (I'm not a fan, btw).

Holy sh*t! And bearing in mind that I only payed 32 euros for the P64 when they were still made. This surely makes me want to sell - it will more than fund for a MSSIAH :lol:

If you want to see more mods that people have done, check the official Prophet64 forum, there are people who have done quite some wicked stuff with their C64s.

Yeah, I was a bit late. But I think I will get a MSSIAH as soon as it's available. MIDI will definitely make it a nice and usable SID synth.

Mine should be on it's way as well. I ordered two SID2SID boards to go with it as well so I can practice my soldering skills some more :-)

I guess it's time to dust off my C64s again and set them up for when the MSSIAH arrives (can't wait!). Also time to finally get started on doing that pot-mod (as in potentiometer, not that green stuff that messes with your head) since I sold my paddles a while ago (which were pretty awkward to use with tth Prophet64 anyway).
