OS4 and Whdload
« on: September 29, 2008, 04:19:06 PM »
I am thinking of buying one of red's A4000T's. I already have a PPC card given to me by a friend. But my question is if I go with OS4 will whdload work with it (because I maily use my amigas for games)? Are any of you guys using whdload with OS4? Any problems?

No WHDload does not and will never work under OS4.

The nature of OS4 design makes it impossible.

Which is why it sucks ass for classics.

If your heart is really set on getting OS4, then use UAE to run your classic games.  WHDload allows games designed for the earliest 68k Amigas to run on Amigas equipped with newer 680x0 processors and chipsets.

I cannot imagine UAE runs fast enough under OS4 to be fun, especially on a BPPC 160MHz 603e. I doubt even a 233MHz 604e is much fun.

Seems stoopid to use UAE with "OS4 classic" when the Amiga's hardware and a perfectly good 68k CPU is in the box.

If you must use OS4 then create a dual booting setup with an OS3.9 partition so you can reboot to play games using WHDload.

(Or more likely, create an OS4 partition that you use once and takes up a load of room on your hard drive!)

I agree.  A dual boot system would be a much better option than UAE.

I agree.  I think an A500 would work MUCH better for games.  Hey, I have an idea... I'll trade you one of my AWESOME A500's for that USELESS PPC accelerator (and I'll even pay for the shipping)... but only cause you seem like such a nice guy.  :-D  ;-)  ;-)

Looks like I'll be running an OS 3.9 system if I buy one of red's 4000t's since gaming and whdload is my main concern... Don't know if the 4000t is worth the investment at this point, as I could probably get a 060 or PPC accelerator (already have a Bliz 030) for one of my 1200's cheaper and have almost as nice a machinbe as the decked out 4000t with the PPC card my friend gave me. Decisions, Decisions...

If gaming with WHDLoad is all you do then you won't need a 4000(T), 040/060 or RTG card anyway.

The Blizzard 030 in your 1200 makes your Amiga the perfect WHDLoad machine; no need to upgrade anything IMHO. A better accelarator won't make your WHDLoad experience any better; it may even make it worse as an 040/060 is less compatible than an 030.

But it makes the browsing to the WHDload icon a much more pleasurable experience ;-)

Well yeah ;-). But with an 030 and AGA you could have quite a responsive Workbench that looks ok too.
