SMBFS and Kerberos - Possible?
« on: September 26, 2008, 09:44:40 PM »
Hi all,
Been a while since posting on here last, it's been Fresher’s week here at Sheffield Uni  :pint:  :pint:

You can probably guess from the title and my previous threads what Im planning on doing. If the Uni's network system is now using the new Kerberos authentication, do I stand any chance at all of getting my A1200, which I've brought along with me (Using SMBFS for networking) to be able to access, say, my own passwordered account even if I knew all the relevant credentials?

Has this got something to do with the networking to Vista problems that some of us folks seem to of been experiencing, by any chance?

Just doing some background research before I :flame: the IT guys for DNS IPs, server names, file locations and so on...

Cheers,
Hodgkinson.
Main A1200D: WB3.0, 3.1 ROMs, 2GB HDD, Blizzard 1230IV (64MB RAM + FPU) and a whole load of custom heatsinks... :flame:

Hmm - afaik SMBFS can't do Kerberos, but I may be wrong (hopefully)...
On Vista you can switch it off somehow, but if the server's policy is set that way, there's little you can do I'm afraid.

> new Kerberos authentication,

Kerberos is anything but *new*,.. maybe new to you?
I doubt there's much Amiga support for kerberos. Kerberos and SMB shares (AD does it out of the box, Samba can be configured to do it with configuration) can be linked together so that you don't have to authenticate with a password again if you have the right keys from the KDC. But, it should allow you to authenticate with a password.

Kerberos is an integral part of Active Directory so vista should have no problems working with Kerberos.

// Edit

You probably mean networking an Amiga and a box running Vista.. that's nothing to do with Kerberos. It's more likely to do that the encryption used to do the authentication in SMB has changed (again) for vista and smbfs doesn't support it.

Also, why would you need to go winding up the IT people when the details you need can easily be obtained by querying the network yourself?

Thanks for the details.
Query the network? HOW?
I've got a pretty good idea where my file store is located already, just been looking at the network shares (Having said that they seem to be using some special software - Won't name it just yet for security - That might cause issues with my plans.

Anyone any idea where the DNS IP is stored in SMBFS? (That needs changing...)

PS. The Vista bit was a shot in the dark ;-)
PPS. When I say new re Kerberos, an IT mate of mine advised me that servers on their system may be updating from the LAN Authentication manager to Kerberos soon, and likewise the Uni might of done the same.

Cheers again (Heh, still fresher’s week  )
